We had the good fortune of connecting with Raquel Kalina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raquel, what are you inspired by?
Art, design, music, film, people, crystals and their symbolism, the ocean, the desert, just overall nature and the universe.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make crystal jewelry and accessories. Right now I’m really excited about delving deeper into the process of creating pieces by soldering and electroforming. (A method that involves building thin layers of metal onto a piece by electrically and chemically removing the copper from a source onto a connected piece suspended into an acid solution and electrical charge.) It’s a slow and time consuming process but so much fun, and the level of detail and your overall control of handcrafting the entire piece is incredibly rewarding.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many great things about this city it’s hard to narrow it down. But I love the energy and vibe of the downtown arts district, and we’d have to hit up the local restaurants and shops all over Silverlake and Los Feliz. Some places in Hollywood are fun, then there’s the Grove farmers market and the beach cities.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Just all of my friends and family who’ve helped me haul all my products and booth set up to markets and festivals up and down California and for helping me throughout all the long hours of fulfilling large wholesale orders. Also a couple of my favorite professors at FIDM and my boss at my first fashion internship for the valuable resources, opportunities and advice I’ve gotten over the years.
