We had the good fortune of connecting with Raven Russell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raven, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Love. I think the most beautiful experiences we can share with each other are bonded and fortified in Love. I feel that through Love we can motivate the change or growth we desire in ourselves and the world. Love requires the best of ourselves and makes space for the worst. Love heals and I think we have all needed some healing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make art about my own experience of this life and through my subjectivity I harness the divine energy that flows through me and make what feels good, pertinent, or important. I love making and I love ideas, I am influenced by all kinds of philosophies and ideas from the past and present. I think they’ve influenced me in ways that has brought me to this point in time, anything worth having doesn’t come easy, I think the challenges were some of the best moments. Gratitude will save you from any hardship, there’s always something to be grateful for, even if it’s the next breath and that’s what keeps me moving forward.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love SomiSomi, I would totally take them for taiyaki in Little Tokyo. The matcha ice cream is my favorite! I might take them down to the beach, pick up some Del Taco on the way. Burritos are always good. I might take them for cuban sandwiches or maybe some ramen, everyone loves ramen and there are a million spots in LA that are all good, you can’t really go wrong! I would definitely take them to some galleries, pop in check out what’s going on in the contemporary art world. Maybe some clothing shopping, I love clothes and I love shopping so I don’t see how we wouldn’t have fun, new digs are always nice! and bars we would hit up bars for sure. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wanna shoutout God, the Universe, my past and future selves, the divine energy that is LIFE! I also wanna thank and shoutout my family, my mom, my best friend Jason, my boyfriend Matthew, my friends who love and take care of me, my mentors who have guided me and encouraged me to keep working and believe in myself and my art. Thank you to everyone who’s ever shared a kindness with me and to whoever has taught me a lesson, life is so wild and crazy and to encounter any individual can be so helpful in our journey, my path has certainly been one filled with different characters and divine forces, I am endlessly grateful to be me and to all of those who have helped me become who I am today.
