We had the good fortune of connecting with Ravin Goyal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ravin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
For me, pursuing an artistic career was never a choice. Rather, it was a passion I could not deny. Once I picked up the camera and started teaching myself how to use it, I knew that photography was my calling. As my interest evolved, I just wanted to keep learning.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
From the moment I started using my camera, I didn’t know what made “art,” what made the perfect picture or what made other people appreciate it. That type of ambiguity allows you to play around and experiment. I would take a bunch of photos and analyze them, then say “this looks good to me, ” or “this is not looking right.” It allows you to build your own individual style of art. Now, I know that I have unique styles of using lines and rules of photography. My art is different from other photographers because of the intense colors and angles I use as well. Another thing that is different in my artistic process is that I really enjoy collaboration. Some artists do not want or value other people’s opinions on their creations, however, I respect and appreciate when I have feedback. I understand that it’s not just me who is going to be represented – it is the models, the hairstylist, the makeup artist, etc. Therefore, I feel like their opinions matter, and they help me get better.
Nothing is going to be easy. But if everything was easy, I would have not learned as much. Challenging situations give me more time to learn and grow. I try to practice again and again, even when I am editing a photo, for example. I will play around, but also use books and tutorials online – whatever it takes – to achieve the final result I am after. You never know when you’ll discover something that hasn’t been done or develop a new style of your own.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the outdoors, and California is the perfect place for that. The beach is always the first stop, but I like day trips too, and San Fransisco is my go-to. I also enjoy camping at Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. It makes you feel so refreshed. When it comes to dining, I love to cook and explore Indian dishes at home.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One professor in particular, who is a professional photographer, Varun Patel, really stands out to me. At the beginning of my education, he guided me through lighting techniques, how business works, how to communicate with subjects and colleagues. He has been instrumental and inspirational to my career. Another person I think deserves recognition is Lindsay Adler, a portrait and fashion photographer based out of New York. Her work is very beautiful, and her methods of framing are something I aspire to in my own art. I learn so much from her workshop and appreciate her ability and desire to teach up-and-coming photographers.
