We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Carreto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a child, I was bullied by another kid in my class for not understanding my multiplication facts. I went to a tutoring center to receive help but I didn’t feel seen, heard or understood. On the outside, I may have struggled with multiplication facts, but on the inside I struggled with insecurity. I didn’t believe in myself or the fact that I had the ability to grasp my multiplication facts. I needed someone who could remind me of what I was capable of, make learning fun, and teach me in a way where I would learn best. Fast forward to 2017, and I became the solution I needed as a child and the solution my parents needed back then. I created an academic coaching business that helps children feel seen, heard, and understood. I utilize a child’s genius (their interests ex. legos, barbies, video games) into a personalized lesson plan, that gets them engaged and excited to learn. Academic coaching provides a whole child approach to learning. I coach children on academics, mindset, time management, goal setting, social skills, & study skills in the comfort of their own home. I also coach & empower parents so they may continue to support their child throughout their academic journey. My mission is to help children become independent learners and for parents to feel empowered when it comes to their child’s academic journey.

What should our readers know about your business?
Creating INTELLI-G as a business & brand has not been easy but it has been worth it! In 2017 I left my corporate job, making 6 figures, to go and create INTELLI-G. I didn’t have a background in education or a teaching credential. My background and experience was in business. I remember receiving a revelation from God to quit my job and start INTELLI-G. As a first generation Latina and the first in my family to make 6 figures, I thought it was crazy to leave my stable and secure job but I trusted God. I left and used the money and knowledge I gained to start INTELLI-G from the ground up. I networked, I volunteered, I read books/articles, I used Google, watched videos on Youtube, I used social media to share my journey, and little by little I gained clients. Along my journey, I’ve learned people don’t buy what you sell, they buy why you do what you do. They care about the person behind the scenes and why they do what they do. I used to be afraid to share my story and now I realize my story is powerful and should be shared. My goal is for more children to see that they are not alone and just because they struggle in an academic subject, it doesn’t mean they are not smart. They just learn differently and that’s okay. Learning is not a one-size-fits-all. I look forward to showing more children what they are capable of by helping them shine their light. We are all a genius at something. Whether that be in art, music, or legos, we all have our own unique genius from within.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to shoutout my parents for their constant support! My mom who taught me patience, creativity, and compassion for others. My dad who taught me creativity, humility, and how to be a servant leader. They both have encouraged and supported me every step of the way. Thanks Mom and Dad!
