Meet Rebekah (ruiyi) Guo | Artist & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebekah (ruiyi) Guo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebekah (Ruiyi), what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was very simple, growing up I always know that I wanted to pursue something of my own. To be honest, I always thought that it’s going to be a design studio because that was the path I was on ever since high school and college. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still very passionate about architecture design and will continue pursuing it on the side. So going into starting my own business, it was a big pivot that I made, I could choose to gamble and give it all or play it safe. As spontaneous and adventurous as I am, I chose to give this path a shot. Everyone around had warned me about how rough this journey could be, but I’m the type of person that likes to prove others wrong.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart is having perseverance in what I believe in. It is the perfectionist in me that pushes me to be better every single day, and to not get defeated when I don’t see much results whether it is art or being a creator. It is definitely not the easiest to begin with, being an artist entrepreneur, it is essential to have self-discipline. Without a 9-5 and a “supervisor,” it is really easy to slack off, so the very first thing was to create a routine and stick to it regardless of what happens. I remember that i would set alarms that are 5 minutes apart from each other starting from 6:30am to 7am to make sure I can get up early to go to the gym. It was hard at the beginning, but you get used to it eventually and it became a habit. I know I talked about being a perfectionist, however, that is also the biggest lesson that I have learned so far. In order for an artist to be successful (ie, well known, making money etc) they also have to be a good business men/business women. And if you are stuck on making your art perfect and never release it, no one will ever know about it. A lot of time, through the process of making the art “perfect,” the art piece itself would lose its shape, form, and meaning. Eventually, you might not even recognize the piece. So, why not just do it. One important lesson that I took from Rick Rubins creative act is that set a deadline for yourself and just go for it, when you wait too long, you’ll be lost.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well since im not local from LA, I can only give one based on my short experience here. I have to show them the beach but mostly the pch drive and we can stop at any beach that we feel like. And definitely pch at night time, we might be able to chase down the bioluminescent beach.
Get froyo and watch the sunset anywhere.
Joshua tree is worth the drive because the stars at night is to die for.
explore art district and the row. I don’t think there’s a miss at any of those coffee shop.
have to go to death&co, the drinks and ambience are unmatched for whiskey and tequila lovers. another must go is the hidden whiskey bar in seven grand. The bartender truly loves and understands whiskey and will give you the best experience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give the shoutout to my family to begin with, they have given me nothing but support throughout my journey. And shoutout to my good friend JayR for helping me starting the journey and giving me guidance. And lastly my best friends and partner who are guiding me through the beginning stage and every step of the way. Their faith in me help to keep me going.
