We had the good fortune of connecting with Remi Shimazu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Remi, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think about risk differently after 2020. 2020 was a stark reminder of how fragile and unpredictable life can be. It gave me the wake-up call (and time) I needed to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. It gave me the understanding that we need to be as intentional as possible with our time and enjoy every day of our lives.

2020 allowed me the opportunity to re-evaluate my priorities. I created a list of non-negotiables for the life I wanted to live post-COVID. And then actively started looking for ways to achieve that life – that’s when I stumbled upon the world of blogging and content creation.

In April 2021, I put in a month’s notice at my full-time agency job. I had known for a while that I no longer wanted to be in the advertising world. But, when you’re so caught up in the hustle and the go-go-go, it can be hard to pull yourself out of it to stop and think. I put in my notice because I knew that it wasn’t feasible (physically or mentally) to get my online business where I wanted it to be while also working 12+ hours a day in production at my agency job. I took the risk because I value my time and wellness.

I see risk as something that is inevitable. And if it’s unavoidable, then it’s something that I will face regardless if I play it safe or go for it. I made a pact with myself at the end of 2020 that I no longer would let fear dictate how I live my life. I know that I can do whatever I put my mind to, and I will find a solution to whatever obstacle comes my way. I am committed and completely trust myself. You will need that to take the leap.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m still in the beginning stages of this brand new chapter in my life. I started my business, Lifestyle by Remi, because I felt like my social feed was filled with so much negative and heavy content in 2020. I wanted to create a hub where people can find positive and uplifting content that inspires them to go after what they want in life.

I’m excited about everything that’s to come for my fledgling business! I have so many ideas for how I want to expand outside of just a content hub. I’m looking forward to reaching more people, building a community, and taking them along with me on this wild journey.

I’m most proud of myself for taking action and not settling for a mediocre life. The hardest part about leaving my job and starting my own business was the fear of what others may think. I worked in advertising so was surrounded by PROFESSIONAL creatives and strategists – who was I to think I could be a successful online content creator and business owner? Eventually, I realized that it doesn’t matter what they think because they don’t have to live my life.

I hope my work empowers others to also stand up to that fear. I want to show people through my work and how I live my life that anything is possible.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First, you must plan your days based on what area you’re going to be in. One of the biggest mistakes I see visitors make is driving back and forth on the 405 all day. Here’s my recommended itinerary:

Day 1 – Downtown LA (Little Tokyo, Arts District, LA Live, etc.) & K-Town to visit the sights, museums, breweries, and then finish with KBBQ.
Day 2 – DISNEYLAND
Day 3 – Beach day (either in the OC or in Hermosa/Manhattan Beach), check out Manhattan Beach Pier
Day 4 – Hike in the morning for the views, 3rd Street Promenade, Santa Monica Pier, get Japanese food in Sawtelle
Day 5 – Venice Beach (not for the beach…), Abbott Kinney, Venice Canals, dinner in Downtown Culver City
Day 6 – Universal Studios
Day 7 – Check out Beverly Hills/Melrose, go to the Grove

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today in my business without the unconditional love and support from my friends and family. They believed in me even without fully understanding what I was trying to do. They just knew that I’d be okay and that I would make it. Their belief in me is one of the driving forces that keeps me going and allowed me to take the risk of leaving my full-time job.
