We had the good fortune of connecting with Renita Quirls and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Renita, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I used to equate being busy to making progress. I felt, as long as I was looking busy I was headed toward the end goal. Over time I realized that busy could also equate to…well…just being busy. It is possible for a person to remain busy and not make any progress. It is possible to be running and running until we have surpassed empty.

“Running on E” is a popular saying but not literally possible. Next time you want to test this theory see how far your vehicle can go on an empty gas tank. Speaking of cars, there is more to gas to keep a car running. Similar to this long-winded car analogy, that is how it is with people. There are things we need to constantly fuel our body with to keep it going. When one component is empty it can affect our progress. This point segues to the importance of balance. How do we stay balanced to assure our business and personal life stays intact?

Easy Answer: Make sure you are feeding all of your facets. We are comprised of mind, body, and soul. To assure we can handle the daily stresses of life we have to make sure each of those components is fulfilled. I found in the past that I would only nurture one and keep going. Then when one portion runs out, I would individually handle it. It wasn’t until I learned that daily pouring into all components is what helped me stay full. Implementing a self-care regimen helped me to be busy with a purpose other than the appearance of looking busy. When I started doing things with a purpose that is when I started to see progress in my professional life. That is when I started to feel balanced in my personal and professional life.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2017, I created the Be Your Own Kind Platform. This platform was inspired by my personal story of always feeling like I had to fit in. As I grew older I realized that I was enough and gave myself permission to “be my own kind.” My platform encourages others to do just that.

My platform began as a blog and later grew into a podcast and youtube channel. Building a platform is not easy work but it is awarding when people reach out to you and thank you for something you said. My aim to help someone. Nothing more. Nothing less.

My largest challenge was viewership. Yes, in the beginning, I was working hard but I was not consistently publishing content. Once I started pushing out more content and connecting with followers, I saw growth in my platform. This platform has taught me the magic of perseverance. I give it my best even if I get one view on my channel or podcast. At the end of the day, this is a vision I believe God has given me for my life so I learned not to get caught in the numbers but to focus on the purpose.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is so much to do in my hometown, Chicago, Il, and when I say so much to do I mean so much to eat. My number one restaurant is Wildfire located in the downtown area. Their food is, well, FIRE! My favorite thing to order is their martini flight alongside a medium steak with a parmesan crust.

Another great spot is Ja’ Grill that is located in the Hyde Park area in Chicago. The jerk wings are so delicious as each spice sparks each of your tastebuds. If you open for dessert I would suggest their rum cake. It is the great booze-infused ending to a perfect authentic Jamaican meal.

Need a quick dinner to pick up along the way, Nathan’s Chicago Style in Hyde Park, Chicago is the way to go. They have a plethora of menu items of different cultural cuisines. My personal favorite is the Jerk Chicken Pasta. This creamy pasta entree is paired with a salad and garlic bread. Their portions are very generous and can last up to tomorrow’s lunch and dinner. They also make home-made ginger beer and lemonade that are divine.

You’re Welcome in Advance!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my husband, as he has always supported my business endeavors. He devotes his time and energy to my visions. He is always motivating me past my limits and providing different perspectives. Thank you, Babe!

I would like to send a special thanks to my sister, Kristen, and Mom for attending every live stream, sharing every post, and cheerleading me on. You are appreciated!

I also like would like to shout out my support group. This consists of family, friends, and my devout followers. Without them, I would literally be talking to myself…lol. Most importantly, they keep me motivated, balanced, and honest. I do not think they will ever know how much their support means to me.
