We had the good fortune of connecting with Rick Wheeler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rick, is there something you believe many others might not?
Playing it safe. None of what we did was safe. We opened during a coffee shop during a pandemic lockdown, in an off the beaten path location that is hard to find, in a city overly saturated with coffee shops and very little money. I think that if you believe in yourself, and your business, you can make anything happen. Even if you fail, you can still learn, and that choice is your own.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lion & Lamb Coffee Roasters started in my apartment roasting coffee and selling to friends and family with a dream of opening a roasting facility and go full time. We were blessed to find a location in a small church off the beaten path in Costa Mesa, Ca where we now serve hundreds of guests every day. I always wanted to do something that was charity oriented, but also had a passion for entrepreneurship. We combined those two ideas together, and donate the profits from the sale of our coffee beans to various charities fighting poverty around the world. It is definitely not easy, as there are not too many businesses out there doing something similar for us to learn from, but we could not have gotten here without the support of our family, friends and amazing customers who have been so gracious and kind to us since the beginning. I really believe in the power of people and hope that our brand can show entrepreneurs what is possible for businesses, and show consumers out there what is possible when you support businesses that do good. Change the world, start with coffee!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Costa Mesa is really awesome eclectic city that I think offers some of the best coffee and food around, we would definitely have to head down to the beach for some paddle boarding and then head over to Sidecar doughnuts for the best donuts around. For lunch it would be Laventinas Pizza or a Banh Mi from East Borough. Dinner would 100% be Tonkatsu ramen from Hironori Craft Ramen. There’s definitely plenty to do, hikes along the coast or head to fashion island for some leisure time!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh man, I pretty much owe my entire life and success to others. They pushed me, challenged me, supported me, provided for me. There no way I could be in my positions with them. First the Lord for having His hand in everything. My wife Rosie for pushing me more than anyone, my family, my friends, Watermark OC Church and my entire staff who are LITERALLY the best staff on the planet. I just want to make them all happy for everything they have done for me.
