We had the good fortune of connecting with River Jax and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi River, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve been into art since I was a kid. So I thought why not run a business doing what I love and enjoy vs working for someone else? I’m really happy to be able to be as creative as I want and make pieces of artwork that’s different from others. I love the freedom I’m able to give myself to just create.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is very vibrant and colorful. I love that I’m able to create such expressive pieces of work that capture emotions. I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m not afraid of making untraditional artwork. I don’t believe art should be one particular way. I don’t stress too much about every detail. I don’t focus on realism or not. I just paint and create vibrancy with each piece. Getting to this point wasn’t easy though, As a Black artist I constantly felt as though I had to be like other artists in order to be worthy of a “like” or “share”. But I let go of the pressure of conforming to what others wanted and did what felt true to me. My art will never be like anyone else because it’s unique to me and my life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorites spots in the city of Cleveland are probably the West side market and The Cleveland art museum. The West Side market features a variety of local farmers, bakeries, butchers etc. If they are a foodie like me, it’s one of the top places I love to take people to because you’ll always find something you’d want. There’s so make delicious bakeries there with phenomenal pastries and fresh produce from the farmers that is at its peak. The Cleveland Art museum is also one of my favorites for my creative pals. I love the interactive exhibits there and how huge the collection of artists is there. It’s such a peaceful environment that you can’t help but feel inspired being in. Outside of the museum is what locals call the “duck pond”. It’s a park area with a duck pond that has benches surrounding it’s beautiful. It’s nice to relax on a bench or sit in the grass for a small picnic or gathering from purchases from the west side market.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Dymond Cannon they are the owner and creator behind Dycanco.com. They are one of my best friends and they helped me so much in terms of my business. They are so supportive and about community care. They make ethical, cruelty free, vegan makeup. I couldn’t be more blessed to have them in my life.
