We had the good fortune of connecting with Rocsii Woolley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rocsii, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is the undeniable significance of building relationships. Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I’ve come to realize that cultivating authentic connections is a necessity. The ability to establish and nurture meaningful relationships has proven to be a pivotal factor in the success of my ventures.
I’ve learned that, at its core, business is about people. People do business with those they trust, respect, and genuinely like. It’s not merely about transactions; it’s about the human element that underpins every deal and partnership. This insight has emphasized the importance of being approachable, genuine, and invested in the well being of those I engage with professionally.
Additionally, my entrepreneurial journey has underscored the critical role of emotional intelligence. How we respond to the myriad challenges and opportunities in business can profoundly impact our trajectory. Learning to navigate and understand the emotions—both mine and others has been instrumental. It has taught me that a measured and empathetic response to various situations can make the difference between fostering positive connections and alienating potential collaborators.
In essence, my business has been a classroom in relationship building and emotional intelligence, showing me that success is not solely about the product or service but about the people and the connections we form along the way.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m always filled with gratitude whenever I have the opportunity to share the story of The Source LA. Our organization is a communal force, dedicated to providing essential resources to our community. What sets us apart is our comprehensive range of services, covering everything from employment and job development to childcare, housing solutions (including emergency shelter and homebuyer workshops), food resources, and support for furthering education. We proudly serve every demographic, from single parents to those reentering society.
What distinguishes me from others is that I let my personal journey, once a homeless mother, be the voice for those who might feel lost. Offering one on one support is at the core of what I do, ensuring that individuals in need receive the assistance they require. If I can’t personally assist them, I connect them with someone who can. This journey has been anything but easy. Adversity is inevitable in any industry, but the key is to stay the course, do the work, and progress will follow. Surrounding yourself with knowledgeable mentors, networking tirelessly, and prioritizing follow up and follow through are paramount.
Reflecting on my experiences, I’ve learned crucial lessons. Being rational, not emotional, in business has been a guiding principle, and treating people with mindfulness and respect is non-negotiable.
What I want the world to know is that I started with nothing but a prayer and a dream, earning $13 an hour for a security company in 2015. By 2020, The Source LA had reached six figures in revenue through networking and hard work. My message to others is one of encouragement: work hard, protect your peace, and success will follow.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, I would want to show them the best time ever by immersing them in the vibrant culture and supporting local businesses. Here’s a weeklong itinerary that captures the essence of the community.
Day 1-2: Exploring Black and Brown-Owned Businesses in the community.
We would start by exploring every black and brown-owned business in the city from Leimert park, The Crenshaw District, Inglewood to Culver city. encouraging the support of small businesses in the community.
Day 3: 1010 Wines in Inglewood
For a delightful evening, we’d unwind at 1010 Wines in Inglewood. It’s one of my favorite places, offering a perfect setting for a nice dinner and a cool vibe.
Day 4: South LA Cafe and It’s Bigger Than Us
A morning visit to South LA Cafe for some delicious coffee and a delightful treat like coffee cake or avocado toast. We would then head down to Leimert Park, visiting “It’s Bigger Than Us” headquarters to give back during one of their weekly food distributions. Afterward, we could catch up on any work.
Day 5: Sole Folks Shopping
A shopping spree at Sole Folks, where we could explore and support the amazing creative brands in the community.
Day 6: BPN Mixer
To seal the deal, we would attend a Black Professionals Network (BPN) Mixer. BPN hosts monthly mixers that provide connections and resources to black professionals on their journey to becoming certified legacy builders.
This itinerary not only showcases the fun, interesting, and exciting places in the area but also emphasizes the importance of supporting and giving back to the local community.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to express my gratitude and dedicate this shoutout to several individuals and entities who have played integral roles in my journey:
First and foremost, I give all Glory to GOD. The foundation of my strength, resilience, and inspiration comes from a higher power, and I am deeply grateful for the guidance and blessings I’ve received.
My praying grandmother Jessie holds a special place in my heart. Her unwavering faith and support have carried me further than she may realize. Her prayers have been a source of comfort and strength throughout my journey.
My firstborn son, Andrew is my unwavering “why” along this entrepreneurial path. His presence has been a constant reminder of the legacy I aim to build and the impact I strive to make.
My husband, Mr. Woo, deserves credit for being a pillar of support. In moments when my cup is empty, he pours into me with love, encouragement, and understanding. His partnership has been invaluable.
I extend my gratitude to my mentors, Adam and Chris, who provided me with a transformative opportunity that changed the trajectory of my life. Their guidance and belief in my potential have been instrumental in my growth.
Lastly, I want to acknowledge my parents for giving me life and instilling in me the values that shape my journey and Friends that have supported my journey.
Each of these individuals has contributed to my story, and I am honored to recognize them for their roles in my personal and professional development.
