We had the good fortune of connecting with Rogene Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rogene, what are you inspired by?
Life. As an artist and songwriter, I believe the best songs are inspired by life; Knocks Me Off My Feet, My All, Man in the Mirror.
You and I–we all have our story to tell. My purpose is to transmute our stories in a way that gives people an escape but also heals.
Life inspired Best That I Can, by me. The song taps into the story of wanting better for yourself and fighting to transcend your past so that you can have a more fulfilling future.
I was having a really deep conversation with my sister in 2019 about our childhood upbringing and how it affected both of us. Her exact words are things I incorporated into that song.
It’s challenging to face yourself and look back at the pain you overcame, no one wants to do it. Understandably. But it’s necessary.
I’m giving a voice to women who need encouragement, guidance, and confidence to use their voice and push themselves towards better. I want women to step into their essence.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a musician, songwriter, and co-producer for all my own projects. I also songwrite for other artists as well and it’s rewarding. It challenges me to write from another person’s perspective and tap into their emotions, I get to experiment with tone of voice and word choice. I’m currently in rehearsals for a web-series Lost Girl by Lauren Scott. Wrapping up some songs for that so they possibly get featured in an episode or two. I’ve been in a few films already but this is my first series and I’m so excited! Getting my portfolio together so I can pitch it to inclusive modeling agencies who proudly represent women that look like me with my skin tone and shape.
My goal in the next year or two is to get a publishing deal with Columbia or Sony. I love being an artist, but day to day, I much rather sit at home in a recording studio and write songs all day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my God for always protecting me and guiding me on my path. Next I would like to thank my elementary school art teacher, Mrs. Calamita, for seeing the artist in me and pushing me towards something that fulfills me. Mrs. McClain deserves a thank you as well. Taking her creative writing class in high school changed my life. I would also like to thank my friends and family for their genuine support along my journey. Most importantly a shout out to The Gems for listening to my music, subscribing, telling their friends, and coming to my shows. I will not disappoint you guys, I promise!
