We had the good fortune of connecting with Roman Mathis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Roman, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
For me I would say persistence. When I really put my mind to something I’m not going to stop until I achieve what I want. There’s no quit in me and I don’t give up. I feel like anything in life is achievable if you’re persistent about what you want.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Like with most people I use art to help express myself and lock in on things I love and enjoy. There are so many different art forms that I love and partake in but what stands out for me is storytelling. Right now a major focus is using TV & Film as a medium to tell stories. So I act, write, direct and pretty much anything else you can think of that’s included in the industry to help tell my stories and help other people tell theirs.
That’s just one focus though I feel like I’m versatile and can tell stories in many other ways. I want to write books, and make music, and design clothes and so many other things. There’s so many different ways someone can tell a story, these are just some of the ways I chose to tell mine.
As far as what sets me apart from others, that’s just me being myself. There’s only one of me in this world. One of one. Never to be duplicated or replicated. Growing up or even when I started acting I was never like “oh I wanna be just like this person”, or anything like that. There have always been people that I looked up to and that influenced me but I never wanted to be anybody other than myself. No one else in the universe can be me so that sets me apart.
I got to where I’m at professionally now by just going out and doing what I set my mind to and not giving up. It’s that simple. Easier said than do of course because some days are easy and some days you’re gonna have those challenges. For me I just don’t let challenges deter me from achieving my goals. Challenges are going to happen, can’t let them stop you.
As far as lessons I’ve learned along the way. Those are some things I hope to be able to share with people through my art so stay tuned.
I just want the world to know that I’m not perfect but I wake up everyday and try to be better than the day before.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Is this scenario pre or post covid? If I wanted to show my best friend a good time and covid isn’t a factor, we hitting all my favorite food spots that we don’t have in our hometown. I live in the West Valley so we’ll stay in that area for breakfast. Blu Jam, Cici’s Cafe, & Waffles. Then venture out for our other meals, we can get some soul food at Stevie’s Creole Cafe, Dulan’s Roscoe’s, some Jamaican food at Wi Jammin if we feeling Mexican food, El Carmen or go see the taco lady that set up shop couple blocks away from the house. Maybe take him to K-Town and get some Korean BBQ.
We from Arizona so we have to hit all the different beaches. I like Malibu and they have a good lobster sandwich at Broadstreet Oyster Co. but in a week we’ll probably visit all the beaches.
If we going out and if clubs are open Le Jardin cool, or maybe some speak easies like Break Room 86, Lock & Key, Good Times at Davey Wayne’s, couple bars in we could hit NoHo, the Bungalow in Santa Monica cool. Too many spots to choose from. Or maybe just kick it at a friend’s house at a disclosed location and introduce him to my LA friends and some of our other friends from back home that are out here.
We can throw in some hikes and maybe Getty museum and call it a good week. Oh and we gotta hoop so we’ll hit some runs I know here in the Valley where some former NBA players and some good overseas guys play, let my guy see what the comp is like out here.
All I know for sure is we gonna eat good on the trip and be around good people.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people in my life that deserve credit and recognition for who I am and where I am today. I could go on forever, but I’m gonna make it quick and just say shoutout to my circle (you know who you are). As much as I try to be independent and get it on my own and do everything for myself, I know at the end of the day people need other people. I definitely wouldn’t be where I’m at today without the people I’m privileged to get to spend my life around. So thank you to all the people; past, present, and future that have helped me get to where I am and are helping me get to where I’m going.
