We had the good fortune of connecting with Romell Smothers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Romell, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing that outsiders may not realize about the fitness industry is that, while it might seem like the primary focus should be on creating the best workouts and fitness programs, the real secret to success lies in building a strong marketing and sales process. In addition to that, providing an exceptional client experience and a clear journey is key. Only after these foundations are in place can we truly focus on delivering fun, engaging workouts and well-designed programs that resonate with clients and keep them coming back for more.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Super Heat Fitness is an in-home personal training company that combines fitness, nutrition coaching, and accountability to deliver a holistic approach to wellness. What sets us apart is our dedication to providing personalized, private training in the comfort of our clients’ homes. We focus not only on delivering great workouts but also on creating a strong marketing and sales process and a truly exceptional client experience.

I’m most proud of how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time. It’s incredible to see how our clients are transforming, not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well. What excites me the most is the opportunity to continue expanding and helping more people live healthier, happier lives. We have big plans to grow across California and eventually into other states, and it’s thrilling to be at the forefront of that growth.

Building Super Heat Fitness hasn’t been easy, but that’s part of what makes the journey so rewarding. As a new business, there were plenty of obstacles along the way—from setting up systems and processes to balancing client acquisition with delivering exceptional service. At times, I felt overwhelmed, especially as I was handling so many roles myself. But the key to overcoming those challenges was persistence and the support of the amazing mentors I’ve had along the way. They’ve taught me invaluable lessons, from perfecting my sales approach to creating the best client experience, to honing my marketing and operational strategies.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is the importance of building strong foundations first—marketing and sales processes, a seamless client journey, and technology—before focusing solely on the workouts. I’ve also learned that success doesn’t happen overnight; it takes dedication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from mistakes.

At the end of the day, I want the world to know that Super Heat Fitness is not just about workouts. We are about real, lasting transformation—helping clients feel empowered and supported every step of the way, whether it’s through in-home training, customized nutrition plans, or staying accountable. We’re here to make fitness personal, accessible, and enjoyable

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Day 1: We’d kick off the trip with a morning hike in Runyon Canyon to get the blood flowing and enjoy beautiful views of the city. After that, we’d grab breakfast at one of the best local spots, like The Butcher, The Baker, The Cappuccino Maker for delicious breakfast options and strong coffee.

Day 2: For lunch, we’d head to The Grove—one of the best spots to shop and grab lunch at The Cheesecake Factory. Afterward, we’d hit up a local brewery, like Arts District Brewing Co. or Angel City Brewery, for some drinks and a casual hangout.

Day 3: We’d get a little more active with a private workout session with a Super Heat Fitness Personal Trainer (of course!) followed by a healthy lunch at Sweetgreen. In the afternoon, we’d visit Venice Beach; it’s not Cali without a beach visit.

Day 4: For a more relaxing day, we’d take a trip to Santa Monica Pier to enjoy the classic boardwalk fun, games, and the iconic Ferris wheel. In the evening, we’d grab dinner at The Lobster overlooking the ocean, enjoying fresh seafood while taking in the beautiful beach view.

Day 5: A day trip to Malibu would be on the agenda. After an early breakfast at Malibu Farm, we’d head to Point Dume for some stunning ocean views, then relax at Zuma Beach. A wine tasting at Malibu Wines or Cielo Farms would top off the day.

Day 6: We’d explore the Hollywood Walk of Fame and see the Hollywood Sign up close. For a bit of adventure, we could book a private tour of Universal Studios or visit the California Science Center for some interesting exhibits.

Day 7: On the last day, I’d treat them to a spa day at one of the best local spas like The Spa at the Four Seasons, followed by a light lunch at Republique, a trendy spot that serves amazing French-inspired dishes. We’d close out the day with a fun evening of drinks and good conversation at The Bungalow in Santa Monica—perfect for unwinding and making the most of our last night in town.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to a few incredible people who have had a major impact on my journey and the growth of Super Heat Fitness. First, my wife, Gloria, who has always been my rock and encourages me to keep going, even when times get tough. I also want to recognize Randy, my mentor, who has taught me the importance of putting Jehovah first in everything I do. It’s real, you reap what you sow.

I’m deeply grateful to John, the current owner of United Fitness, who has helped me refine my sales skills and continuously strive for improvement. Alex, the original owner of United Fitness, played a big role in teaching me how to perfect my marketing strategies. I also owe a lot to Svetlozar Zurkov, the owner of Svetness, for guiding me on how to fine-tune my technology, and Joseph Harrison, COO of Svetness, who has been instrumental in helping me improve my operations and documentation.

While some of these individuals may not remember me as they’ve moved on to even greater achievements, their mentorship and the lessons they’ve taught me in business have been invaluable while I was employed under them. I’m still learning from them, and trying to keep up and continue growing!
