We had the good fortune of connecting with Ron Roberson Producer/Director and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ron Roberson, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was homeless! I was fresh off the streets of skid row and found it very difficult to find work. I had success in the downtown LA warehouses and I continued there in an effort to get on my feet. I soon found an area of work that really intrigued me when I walked into the local cable station that not only allowed me to produce and direct my own programs, but trained you as well (for free). I knew then I was in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing! I wanted to tell the story of unique people and places, defining moments in people lives as well a voice for the voiceless. I took the time to learn the trade in an effort to tell the stories my way. There were a million stories on skid row and surrounding areas and many other untapped journeys untouched by mainstream media.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I set up “Miracle Media 1” (retired) to toss my hat into the rink. I wanted to tell the stories of people and places that no-one else touched. As a result I received 3 EMMY nominations and won an EMMY for “Gang Facts, what every parent should know” along with countless awards and recognitions. It was very difficult to navigate the industry system. Many did not want me there others were just outright ego driven and mean. I learned how to keep smiling and be friendly and work my way around them. I was the skid row guy, the ex-drug addict and uneducated black guy. I was often set up for failure, but worked my way around it. I was often left out of critical information, but had people on the inside who alerted me. When I stared out as a volunteer I thought I’d get a camera and start training. Or maybe an edit bay to learn editing. Nope they gave me a broom! I was insulted, but I took the broom anyway and I swept like Michael Angelo painted. As I swept I looked over the shoulders of all departments and somehow developed a photographic memory. I would talk to all of them about what they do and how they did it. That was my training, had I not taken the broom I never would have learned.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well of course all the So. Cal. spots, Hollywood, Downtown LA, San Diego, Anaheim (Disney) I know of several really nice restaurants around town.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My good friend Jeff Trujillo. I came into the industry with absolutely zero experience. This man saw the potential in me and took me under his wing and still advises me to this very day. Also, Jim Roache, who allowed me to spend the night in the studio to learn how to edit. He kept me busy on small jobs that got me through the tough financial times.
