We had the good fortune of connecting with Carole Addison-Goyne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carole, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have been fortunate to follow a career path aligned with my interests and passions over the past three decades. The experiences that enriched me through the years not only propelled me forward on my path, they also inspired me to create new experiences to positively impact other people, and starting my own business offered me a unique opportunity to do this. Nomad Botanicals has been a dream-in-the-making for many years. Bringing it to life happened through a culmination of serendipitous timing and connections, along with the experience and skills I had built throughout the years. I worked for small businesses as well as a multinational corporation in the aromatherapy field, and I gained invaluable knowledge from my Executive MBA experience that helped me fine-tune my business acumen. I always had the passion for creating and bringing beautiful wellness experiences to people, and the doors really opened up for me when I realized I had the confidence, courage, and curiosity to start a business. I consider that trifecta to be a North Star that guides me in both times of challenge and abundance.

What should our readers know about your business?
Nomad Botanicals handcrafts luxury aromatherapy products to transform daily routines into vibrant wellness rituals. Inspired by the journey we are all on, our premium quality essential oil-based collection invites people to journey through aroma, sparking imagination and memories, from the comforts of home. The physical, mental, and emotional benefits of our premium botanical ingredients also offer peace of mind and protection from the elements when venturing out into the world. Nomad Botanicals was born from my passion for supporting the wellbeing of the nomad in all of us through the various journeys of our lives. Inspiring people to embrace their wildest dreams the way I did with Nomad Botanicals is one of my greatest joys. We celebrate sustainable botanicals grown around the world along with the traditions surrounding them. Many of the scents and stories within our collection are inspired by own travels and experiences. It has been like creating a tapestry of my journey, scented by the aromatic memories along the way. In a historical Sonoma County warehouse, our dream team of artisans and formulators bring these globe-trotting botanicals to new life before sending them back out into the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friend on an aroma journey through the naturally scented sanctuaries of Sonoma County…from the forest to the ocean. We would begin our journey in the Redwoods of Occidental, feeling transported as we step back in time thousands of years next to these old growth giants. The rejuvenating fragrance all around us is a reminder to spend more time in nature, especially in magical places like this where I feel as tall as the trees around me with roots equally as deep and grounded into the earth. We would venture through the clouds towards the ocean, feeling like we’re in a dream as the coastal fog softens everything we see. We would stop and smell the fragrant herbs and wildflowers along the way and then take a big breath of fresh air as we eventually reach the crashing waves. Invigorated by the salty air, we would travel down the coast and fall into a charming cafe to enjoy artisan everything…from cheeses to farm fresh vegetables to exquisite coffee. Making our way back to the historical town of Petaluma, we would pop into the Nomad Botanicals studio to make a botanical perfume that captures the essence of the past hours of bliss. In the days ahead, we would continue taking in the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the region…like sauntering through the sweeping Lavender fields at Matanzas Creek Winery with a taste of the vines in our glasses and enjoying a spa day at Osmosis Day Spa, a wellness gem that captures the raw beauty and timeless magic of Sonoma County.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been honored to have several important mentors in my life, beginning with my Mom, who is not only a wellspring of love and encouragement, she is also an example of a brilliant business woman who built her business through hard work and an exceptional commitment to giving back to others. I also had inspiring leaders who invested in me throughout my aromatherapy, perfumery, and business education, in addition to my professional work, most notably Mandy Aftel (aftelier.com) and Cindy Jackson (plinkleadership.com). Each of these people have played a vital role in my journey. With gratitude for the rich mentorship I have had in my life, I was elated to be able to pay it forward by mentoring Caroline Morey when we were matched through a mentorship program during her undergraduate studies in Marketing. Our semester-long mentorship evolved into a business partnership where, almost four years later, I continue to learn as much from her as she does from me. Caroline was right there with me as we brought Nomad Botanicals to life, and she has consistently been the kind of partner I could have only dreamed of as we evolve and grow our business!
