We had the good fortune of connecting with Ronald Luo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ronald, what makes you happy? Why?
As a wedding and real estate photographer. Whenever a client received pictures and says ‘I love your photo so much. You help me save the best day of my life forever’, or ‘Your photo helps me sell my listing for a very good price’, I will feel very relieved, because my contribution has definitely helped other people, and I have made work not just a mechanized way to make money, but a real impact on the society.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Though the industry needs creativity and innovation. But I think the basic skills are still very important. When you are comfortable with your skills, think about how to use it to make a difference, instead of using filters to gain attention. Filters will become out of fashion with the times, and the most solid skills will not go out of style.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I should take him to the beachside for seafood. Go to Hollywood and stroll down the Sunset Blvd. Go to the observatory to see the night view of LA. Drive to some of the secret and fun spots I recorded on the way to shoot. Finally, cook him a big meal at my home.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow, so many people here to thank. I would like to thank all the seniors who have shared their experiences with me. Because I didn’t choose to study in college, I chose to study by myself. I don’t have a systematic learning goal for this. Whenever I encounter difficulties and doubts, these seniors are willing and patient to educate me. Kenny JC, a photographer who was my mentor and friend from San Francisco. He made me see the reality of this society when I was full of fantasies about the industry. Let me see the essence of business when I am blindly persistent. And also the realtors economy that was willing to give me the opportunity to photograph when I was a beginner, so that I have enough opportunities to practice and improve.
