We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Chan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After I graduated from Berkeley, I started work as a process engineer. My job was focused on how we can make our production lines as efficient as possible to maximize revenue for the plant. During work, we were constantly reacting to breakdowns, putting out fires, and performing repairs. What we realized was that the company could save on costs and drive the most revenue if we placed our multi-million dollar assets on an effective maintenance and reliability program so we wouldn’t have to halt production, ideally ever. I was then placed on a team to find a CMMS to help us do just that, I ended up picking a company that’s our competitor today. It ended up not working for us and a net loss. What I found is that most CMMS are ineffective, have slow-time-to-value, and are simply not optimized for the deskless workforce. I knew I could make a better solution. One that is built for the technicians in mind as much as it is for the rest of the business. So, I quit my job, taught myself how to code, and 5 years later UpKeep is now the leading, mobile-first CMMS with 100+ employees strong across the US, Canada, UK, and India. We’re fortunate enough to have experienced immense growth in such a challenging year. I could not be more proud of my team.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our mission here at UpKeep is to empower maintenance teams to revolutionize their business. Emergence Capital had reported that. “about 80 percent of workers globally are ‘deskless,’ yet, only 1 percent of the $300 billion spent annually in software venture capital goes toward technologies for those workers.” What sets UpKeep apart is that we are a mobile-first, cloud-based CMMS solution designed with the deskless workforce in mind. UpKeep is easy to use, quick to implement, and simple to integrate. We play well with other systems (like SAP for example) while speeding up time-to-value. This way, we can offer a hyperconnected and functional system that works for the technicians as much as it can work for the rest of the business. We’ve grown rapidly over the past 5 years and it’s been an awesome journey. The path we’re on has taken constant iteration, grit, and execution. Every challenge that’s come our way we’ve taken head on as a team. We are serving a workforce that has been historically underestimated and under-invested. What we’ve learned is that to make meaningful difference, we need to take the time and effort to listen to our customers, the community, and their pain-points. What I want to world to know is that UpKeep is committed to maintenance and reliability teams across the globe, together we can revolutionize maintenance. Maintenance is less of a cost-prevention center and more of an essential driver for revenue. The world is sustained through maintenance.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
UpKeep HQ is in Westwood, California, right next to UCLA. If my best friend were to visit (I’ll pretend that it isn’t COVID), I’d take my best friend around the city. Monday, a tour of the office of course and a 5 minute walk to the Hammer museum to explore and decompress right before we stuff ourselves with some Fat Sal’s sandwiches. Tuesday is definitely going to include walk through UCLA, a visit to The Getty, and a trip to Tsujita in Sawtelle for some amazing tsukemen ramen. The rest of the week can be a free-for-all. We’re right next to KoreaTown, so KBBQ is a must and a visit to Griffith Park. There’s so much to do and explore this list could be endless!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to Shelley, my wife, and my entire team at UpKeep. I’ve been fortunate enough to have an amazing year of growth even in such a challenging point in our World’s history. I couldn’t have had this without them and their support!
