We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Massiah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryan, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. Being raised in Toronto definitely impacted me in life and my creative influences. With the majority of the year, being usually cold, I would tend to find myself in my earlier days a lot of times indoors. I would keep myself occupied.

Whether that was in front of a tv, being inspired by what I saw at the time (especially w/ commercials), or feeling a sense of accomplishment from completing a videogame. But really (as I got older) creating something out of nothing in front of a computer.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Not to take away anything from my fellow creatives out there. But what I think sets me apart from others is being raised with having a wide span of influences as a child and teen growing up.

I’ve always tried to keep an open mind about life in general. I would absorb information and content like a sponge! My taste has always been very eclectic. For ie example music, I would listen to groups like The Cure, Bon Jovi, and Deftones, to something like Public Enemy and Boys 2 Men. That same way of thinking applied to other mediums that I consumed. If something moved me in a certain way, I would make sure to make note of it and try to figure out why. That sort of problem-solving also expanded into my work. Where I look at every design task, as its own unique problem that needs to be solved.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely would have to be Fairfax, because I have a few friends who are sneakerheads and would love that section of town. Taking a nice trek through Griffith Park trails, leading to the observatory, to then look over beautiful Los Angeles. And definitely without a doubt the beaches that we have in the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Many people have helped and influenced me during my career path. From mentors that I had growing up, to peers that saw I had the drive and were willing to share their knowledge with me. And most importantly of all, my mother Theresa Massiah. Who is the biggest inspiration in my life. Where she always gave me advice that I needed to make the right decisions, in my journey. And encouraged education and to follow my passions.
