We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Tian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryan, what principle do you value most?
Gratitude and Faith are the essential core values in my life principles. Gratitude roots my heart in cherishing everything, every moment, and every person in my life. It is easy to get used to taking them for granted. Faith brings me a vision and drives me to move forward no matter what shows up on the way. It’s been said that you will achieve your goal if you are faithful. There is a much bigger world than the tangible world we could see and feel. Being thankful and faithful leads me to live a balanced life, also helps me a lot in my visual art’s creation. It powers me with good energy to create visual stories.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Following your heart might sound cliché, as you won’t realize what it takes until you truly decide to take that leap of faith and go through the process. Everyone is searching for something. I think what drives me most is the curiosity to know myself and know life. It becomes my creative force. What could be better than film, this magical media to tell stories via sound, moving images, people, and all the things around them? It is all about the ways of seeing. The vision leads me. And I keep my faith in it. It is not an easy journey to where I am now. Learning how to get along with inner fear, uncertainty, and realistic obstacles is part of the journey of filmmaking, the same as life. We need to earn it. The best part of it is “ Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” (from the film Forrest Gump) Everything is a blessing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would recommend them first to try some best boba tea in town. Then they can start from Domino Park in Brooklyn, have quick bites in the Timeout Market, and enjoy the best NYC view on the rooftop. The Guggenheim Museum and Whitney Museum of American Art are good spots if they are art fans. Also, they can have a short weekend trip of hiking and having a picnic in the Palisades Park, and enjoy Hudson river views all the way to wrap up.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give my big shoutout to all the beautiful souls I have ever encountered in my life. They are my mentors, peers, friends, family, and every person who has ever touched my life. It is their generous supports, love, care, and trust that helped me to achieve what I’ve done so far. Their faith in me is the light tower leading me through the up and downs. Big shoutout to them. And I’ll pass on all those beautiful things to people in need.
