We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina Jurado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sabrina, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
I feel the biggest impact Ive had on my daughter, regarding my creative career has been that making a living out of your talents and creative passions is possible. Though not the easiest route, it is definitely fulfilling and worth believing in yourself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a collection of things that I love, decorated baked goods and specialty cakes, Paintings, Clay creations, and handcrafted decorative items. I feel what makes my creations stand out is my expression of color and attention to detail. I love color, and I especially love using specific color families that I like to call happy or peaceful colors I also have a little more of a whimsical look to my creations.
I am most excited about transitioning into incorporating more of my visual art, paintings, and clay creations into my repertoire and showcasing more videos about the processes.

I didn’t grow up wanting to make cakes. I never went to culinary school. I a not a traditional Pastry chef. I just knew I always wanted to have a creative job. I started making cakes because I wanted my daughter, Emily, (who is an incredibly talented visual artist today) to have a nice fondant cake for her 5th birthday party. Being a creative person, I felt that was a task I could accomplish. I started watching every youtube video and researching and purchasing what tools I would need and I Made her 3 birthday cakes that year, 2 for practice then her cake for the party. It was a hit! I got so many compliments on it and people started asking me to make cakes for their kid’s birthdays as well. So then I figured maybe I could get a job in a bakery. I applied at a local specialty cake shop and I didn’t get the job. So, I thought maybe they wanted to see more experience, So, I got a job at a grocery store bakery, and a year later I saw that the same specialty cake shop I previously applied for was hiring again. I revamped my resume and applied again, this time I got the job. I worked there, at the Cake Mamas in Glendora for 8 years! I had the opportunity to compete on Cake Wars for Food Network with the owner of the shop a few times and that made it less scary to apply for a Halloween-themed competition series called Halloween Wars. Before I started cake decorating, I thought very highly of this show, it was always filled with such amazingly talented people. So to make it on the show and last for as long as my team lasted, It was a huge accomplishment for me and an experience I hold dear to my heart. I met so many talented people that I look up to and that continue to do amazing things and put out such beautiful work! This also marks when I started getting recognition for my work It wasn’t necessarily easy, working in the baking industry. It’s hard work on your body and can be very stressful. In all honestly working in the service industry is very hard work you gotta love being in service to others to keep going. Working under tight deadlines and with a lot of restrictions is a very mindful thing and can be very stressful.
Always knowing it was for a good cause is what helped me overcome difficulties and the fact that it just needed to be done and I had to do haha. Also, knowing It wouldn’t always be this hard if I just kept working and knowing that I could rest when I got home or on the weekends. When I was younger I would always say, “I’ll rest when I die” Working for yourself is a much different experience. If you do not set your boundaries for “work time” it can all easily bleed together.
Now that I am older and wiser! I know how important it is for me to rest my mind and body and to make time to refill my own cup.
I started this journey for the love of creating something that I can give to others for them to enjoy and appreciate and to help them celebrate their special days! Getting paid was always the bonus until it became the need, when that happens it can be easy to lose that spark it gave to your life. I’ve learned to maintain that spark by making time to create things simply for myself to express and enjoy. I’ve also learned the importance of getting sufficient rest and even though I am still working on maintaining a work/life balance. Because it is very easy for me to stay focused on 1 task and just skip meals and sleep! I am making more of an effort these days to not do that and take good care of myself.
If any message is taken from my story I would hope that it is that nothing comes without work, the universe will guide you but you will have to take action. You always get back what you put into something, and being patient and persevering by seeing the struggles as a learning lesson and not letting it discourage you, will always take you wherever you want it to take you. So set your goals, make the steps and you’ll get where you want to go.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles has so many great places to check out. One place and it’s listed first for a reason, is the last bookstore. I love seeing all the artist’ lofts and their creations and it’s just a fun experience. I do love walking around the Griffith Observatory, it’s an LA landmark. The most nostalgic thing to do is get Taquitos in Olvera St. at Cielito Lindo. The Red Bird in LA is a great spot for a nice meal. For a fun night of dancing, I would bring friends to La Cita or The Let’s Go! Disco in the Art District. Music At Miss Fish! and all the smaller scale venues in Hollywood like the Roxy, the Troubador, and the Fonda Theatre.
I have 2 favorite taco places, one is by my old job in Glendora, called Taco Girl, and I share them with everyone! My family is from Highland Park and they have Villa’s Tacos! My favorite place to get my hair done is in Pasadena, at Ten One Six salon by the talented Isabel… she is a master of color! I also am in love with the Huntington Library, they have such a beautiful Japanese garden that is just breathtaking! And just a walk through old town Pasadena. and have a drink at one of their many bars or restaurants. . I would also travel out to Claremont for one of my favorite Mexican restaurants near the Village called Elviras Mexican Grill. I would also make a trip to the Broad Museum and we can’t forget the Grand Central Market.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My daughter has been my driving force since the day she was born. I’ve strived to be the best I can to ensure she has a mother she can admire and rely on. Throughout the years I’ve had the privilege of working with incredibly talented cake artists and pastry chefs. Collaborating with them has significantly contributed to my professional growth. I couldn’t have pursued entrepreneurship without the unwavering love, support, and encouragement of my partner. His help, along with my daughter’s, has been invaluable during countless late nights. This journey has never been a solo one. I’m grateful for the countless loved ones who have believed in me, cheered me on, and helped me build a strong customer base.
