We had the good fortune of connecting with Sahr Julian Rashid-Noah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sahr Julian, why did you pursue a creative career?
The reason I decided to pursue a creative career is due to the fact that out of all the other things I’ve tried, art or creativity in general has always made me felt the most comfortable and free. I’ve always gravitated towards art since I was a little kid, and surprisingly I’ve been pretty good at it for a long time. I just never really understood I could make this my living until I was a little older. Creating gives me a level of excitement and thrill then anything else, to see something in your head come to life is one of the most dopest feelings ever to me. It can give me a variety of emotions at times, but I sometimes like that because I get to see different sides of me that may or may not come out otherwise. Creating is my form of freedom to do whatever I feel like.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
If I could say one thing about my career so far and being a creative/artist in general is it’s a rollercoaster. I’m still very much into my early stages of my career anyway so I’m sure there’s going to be many more adversities and challenges I will face in the future. But it’s been fun and exciting so far. I’ve learned to be more open with others and network with different creatives, which has made me want to perfect my own craft more too. If I were to describe my art, I would say it can be multiple faceted. I like comics, character drawings, fashion, skateboarding, and typography, so I try to incorporate those things into my art.. I do a lot of digital art but lately I’ve been getting back into doing traditional work and paintings that convey my thoughts a little more. I tend to create work a lot more different this way than my digital work.

In terms of my work for people, I really do whatever they ask, but of course try to intertwine my own design touch to it. With clients I try to make them not feel as clients, and want them to feel as though they too also have a part in the design process of course, so it’s more of a collaboration. But I make sure my efforts are in understanding what they want and their values and how I can bring that to life for them through design.

This is how I approach my own brand I am starting up too, but also a little different. Because I don’t want my brand to be considered a brand but more of an art project. It’s a personal expression of myself, to share with others and build a community and that’s Eyecandy. Not just others though but people who feel uncomfortable being seen by other people. As my slogan says, Eyecandy is for those who feel invisible, it’ represents people who wish to express themselves however they feel creatively, without worrying about the eyes of others. Eyecandy is still in the works as there’s many things I want to rework within the frame of the brand and its design language and identity in general.

One of my biggest achievements in my career so far, was working with Uprisers and PacSun last year in December to create a T-shirt for their family drive event that brought the LA community together to give back. It was one of the most coolest experiences I’ve gotten to be apart of and definitely a big leap within my career as an artist, working with a global company like Pacsun. Especially with me being so young and early within my career.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t know to be honest with you lol, we would most likely hang out in downtown Columbus. There’s a few spots and things to do, I like to skateboard, check out art at the museum and stuff. We would also definitely check out Franklinton which has a lot of art related activities. We could also check out the Short North which has a lot of shops like Sole Classics, Heat Archive and restaurants there too.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would say of course my parents as they were the first ones to take notice of my talent and interest in art. And they invested in my talent at a young age encouraging me to get better and absorb more art. But as I grew up I started to gain more knowledge of just the world in general, I would shout out my uncle Sayyid, for being a big role model in my life. Teaching me lessons that can be transferable to many aspects of my life and my career as I get older into my teenage and young adult years. I thank him for always listening and being understanding but also being able to give me advice on anything I came to him with.
