We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Olmedo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandra, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
For many years both Roman and I had always dreamed about starting our own business with the accumulation of skills that we have. When 2020 hit, for many of us the world shifted to a more home-based work environment. We decided that it would be the perfect time to launch our Dance/Yoga studio, with a twist; it would be all virtual! Luckily we had been constructing all the business plans up to that year and decided if not now, when? It was a time when people desperately needed space for themselves to process, to focus on themselves, to stay active and healthy as much as they could. So we provided that space (and from their own homes nonetheless!) Many of our students who were once very active and physically went to the gym, to the yoga studio or to dance class could no longer do that due to building closures and quarantine, so we were very happy to offer our services and space to keep going with those activities no matter the circumstances.
What should our readers know about your business?
We are a virtual wellness studio that provides Yoga, Dance and energy work services. With over 50 years of experience, we are thrilled to bring these modalities to a wide range of students who want to learn and heal from the comfort of their own homes! Between my partner Roman and I, we have extensive training and performance experience in many forms of dance, including: Jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary, ballroom, ecstatic and interpretive. We are also Yoga alliance certified, ECL (Embodiment for Creative Leadership) certified, Healing Touch apprentice certified, Arthur Murray dance syllabus certified, and have countless performance, competition, and outstanding leadership awards across many artistic fields worldwide. With all of these credentials we felt extremely confident in the inner-workings of the dance/yoga/healing worlds and knew that we had something to offer to the public. We are very grateful for all of the pathways we have walked to get here, and through all of the training and experience, starting our own business and space to help others on their journey was the next logical step for us; we love what we do! Starting a business online was a fun new challenge for us, because although we had extensive training in other fields, technology was not one of them. So I took a crash course in coding, website building, and of course, zoom; and with that we were able to get our site and platform up and running within a few weeks. As any non-tech person knows, it was a whole new language! Once we learned the basics it was all the more motivating to get our business up and running.
Overall, we want you, reader, and any potential student to know that we started out with humble beginnings; just two dancers and yogis looking to spread the joy that those modalities bring to everyone around us. Those classes have transformed our lives greatly, and we want you to experience the life-changing benefits for yourself!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Roman and I are based in Los Angeles, so there are so many fun and diverse things we like to do here! Relaxing and recharging are our favorites after long weeks of training and performance. You’ll find us in one of two places; in nature, and with a good plate of food!
Some of our favorite places in nature are near the ocean and in the mountains; you might catch us at Zuma beach in the summer, or hiking in one of the many great mountain spots in Malibu. We also love traveling just outside the city to small towns like Ojai, Temecula, or Joshua Tree to go off the grid camping and be in nature! As for food, well we love a bit of everything. From delicious Russian cuisine (Kalinka Russian Cuisine) to the great vegetarian/Vegan based places in our area (Cena Vegan), we love discovering all the local gems that make LA so delicious!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my partner in crime and in life, Roman Bykov, with whom my dreams wouldn’t have blossomed without. So much gratitude to our students who bring life to our efforts and inspire us daily.
Thank you to my family, for the constant love and support as we navigate these new beginnings.
