We had the good fortune of connecting with Saint No and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Saint, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

There are a couple of ways to answer that question. The first is the obvious, perhaps even cliché response: I’ve always been drawing, painting, and creating since childhood. It seemed inevitable that I would eventually pursue art full-time. The more poignant answer is that I began taking it seriously when I started prioritizing my mental health. Until I was 38, I lived in a fog of antidepressants and negative thought patterns. I tried all sorts of medication, meditation, and exercise, but nothing seemed to work; everything in my life felt like a struggle. I realized I needed to do something solely for myself, free from external influences—something to challenge myself, to truly get to know myself for the first time, and simultaneously find peace to quiet my thoughts.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art serves as a reflection of my journey, encompassing both struggles and triumphs. I believe what distinguishes my work is the personal expression and the fusion of American iconography with a limited color palette. I am intentional in how I utilize art as a tool for self-discovery and healing, overcoming battles with depression, anxiety, and ADHD in the process.

Professionally, reaching my current position has been a challenging journey requiring years of dedication, perseverance, and self-reflection. I’ve encountered numerous obstacles along the way, from the common self-doubt experienced by every artist to the clichéd financial struggles. Nevertheless, I’ve always maintained belief in the power of my vision and the importance of staying true to myself and my work above all else.

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the value of authenticity. I’ve come to understand that my art is most impactful when it emanates from genuine emotion and honesty. Additionally, I’ve learned to embrace resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity, detractors, and imitators.

For me my work transcends mere visual appeal—it’s a narrative, a journey, and a testament to the human spirit. I hope my work to deeply resonate with others, inspiring them to confront their own struggles and discover beauty within the mess of it all.

You can see my latest body of work in person on July 19th at Worklife in Silverlake.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s tough; there are countless options, and I’m not the best tour guide, I tend to be a bit of a loner. However, off the top of my head, I’d drag my friends to museums and galleries such as The Broad, The Pit, Allouche, or one of the other thousand incredible galleries. We’d probably check out some shops like Savas, General Quarters, or Mister Freedom, depending on who I’m shopping with and what they are into. When it comes to food and drink, I’m always up for trying new spots and usually leave the decision to my friends who are more into food than I am. Mostly though, I love going for drives and sharing all the stunning views.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Shoutout to all my women friends and the women who have supported, encouraged, and allowed me to be myself. I would not be who I am without them.  Also, a shoutout to everyone who has taken a chance on me and given me an opportunity. Their unwavering support, encouragement, and inspiration have been crucial in shaping both my art and my personal growth. I’m endlessly grateful for the strength, resilience, and wisdom they bring into my life every damn day.
