We had the good fortune of connecting with Sammy Ruiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sammy, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important thing I’ve learned in my Artistic and Musical journey is being persistent despite the hardships life sends us. Life is so short. I can live with failing at something I gave all of my effort but I cannot live with the regret of not trying,
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistic and musical journeys have not been easy, I am so grateful that I found a home in the horror community. The Horror community is made up of so many people like me who feel like outcasts. I started my art business in 2014 and quickly found art shows and conventions that took me in to display my work. My artwork is similar to what you would find in a Tim Burton movie. They are Dark and Creepy drawings that I like to call being, Sammyfied. After leaving the band I was in after 14 years, I started performing as a solo acoustic guitar musician. I started performing as a solo act in 2017. In 2019 I released my first album entitled “Ghosts of LA”. My music sound is a combination of Mike Ness, Tom Waits and a little creepiness thrown in.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up in an area of Los Angeles, CA called North East Los Angeles. We have a bit of everything. If I was showing a friend around town for a few days, Id take them to the Off Beat Bar to see some punk rock bands, Follerios to eat some delicious Italian food and La Estrella to eat some tacos or nachos. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My accomplishments are completely credited to God, my Mom, my Dad, my family and my friends. Everyone listed encouraged me and supported me every step of my journey.
