We had the good fortune of connecting with Samuel Nkwume and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Samuel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is a big part of our lives. We take risks every day and when you take a risk, there are two outcomes, you either fail or you succeed. When it comes to something you’re extremely passionate about like a career, everybody wants to succeed. I want to succeed, but sometimes you fail. When it comes to your passion, even when you do fail, there are lessons to be learned. Hence, when it is something you believe in, the risk is always worth it, regardless of the outcome.

I took a big risk by leaving my stable accounting job to pursue my filmmaking dream in a different continent. The risk for me was extremely high and failure during the long term wasn’t an option for me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work as a Line Producer in the film industry, mostly in the independent movie space. To simplify it, a line producer oversees the budget, handles the day-to-day operation of the production, and makes sure everything runs according to plan. In production, there are always going to be unavoidable hiccups regardless of the amount of planning and prep, you put into it.

What has helped me and also set me apart from a lot of people is the fact that I’m always relaxed in the face of issues. I never bask in problems. All I think about is the solution. By keeping a positive attitude, it goes a long way in keeping the morale of the rest of the crew regardless of the situation. For me obstacles are just hurdles that will only make you grow.

I am excited about the project i am presently in production on, titled “The Sweepers”, an action thriller currently in post production, expected to be released in 2022.

I got to where I am through work ethic, perseverance, and making good connections. This industry is all about referrals. People like to work with poeople that others can vouch for, that is why you should put in your all into any project you work on. The film industry is not for the faint hearted. It is practically thousands of people trying to do or are doing exactly what you are doing. A lot of people quit or just never progress, but passion and determination can make you go the distance.

I moved to LA from Lagos, Nigeria not fully aware of what i was getting into. All I had was my dream. I am still going strong and you definitely can too!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a week-long trip, I’d start off by taking my friend to a rooftop bar, grabbing tacos from a food truck right after. Since a lot of my friends are movie lovers, we are going to catch a movie at the Egyptian theater or the AMC Universal city Walk.

Also going to go on a nice scenic drive through the PCH through Malibu. Hit museums in downtown LA and the Griffith observatory. As a lover of food, we will be hitting the farmers market or the grand central square.

We will wrap up our weekend in some of my favorite restaurants like Eveleigh, Beauty and Essex or Odyssey.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d dedicate the shoutout to three individuals that led to me being here. My mom and Dad, always being supportive while I transitioned from accounting to film. They constantly believed in me at my lowest points. I also want to give credit to an old friend, Seyi Laketu. Years ago he made me look at life and career in a different way, and is the reason I ended up in the film industry.
