We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Roche and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Knowing whether to give up or keep going can be a challenging decision, as it often involves a delicate balance between determination and self-awareness. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, I have the mentality that you have to keep moving forward and having a strong support system helps with that. I studied Classical piano performance in college and ended up working in PR in Hollywood. Realising I didn’t want performance to be the main part of my life was not giving up but made me keep going to figure out where I fit into the industry.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career began with a love for music and has brought me from Ireland to the United Kingdom and now Los Angeles. It was not a simple journey, as most aren’t. From studying Classical Piano Performance at Leeds Conservatoire in the UK. I graduated college and went straight into teaching full-time. I realized quickly that teaching was not my passion and I had to find a path for myself while wanting to keep music at the forefront of my career. While figuring this out, I worked for a property company managing a portfolio of properties and eventually moved back to Ireland to complete my post-graduate studies in International Business at Maynooth University. This course taught me so much from recognizing my love for communications and cross cultural management to applying performance tactics in presentations. My idea was and is to bring my passion for music and business together. Fast forward to today, I am now part of an incredible organization, White Bear PR working as a Junior Publicist in Hollywood. White Bear specialize in publicity for film and media composers which encapsulates both music and communications. This role has taught me so much already and does not come without its challenges. I am learning to navigate a new city, culture and industry that is fast paced and ever changing. While there may be hard times, I am immensely privileged to be in the position I am and eager to continue to grow and learn about the film music world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite thing about LA is the weather (typical, I know). Coming from Ireland, we only experience the warm sunshine for a couple weeks in the year. If I had my best friend here for the week, I would start with the local attractions – my favorite beach, Will Rogers or a hike in the Santa Monica Mountains, maybe Escondido Falls. I would definitely take a trip down to Palos Verdes to Abalone Cover or go even further to Laguna Beach for some amazing swims. I would also take a trip north to Ojai for a walk around the tranquil oasis and have some delicious food in Ojai Rotie.
For food spots in LA, I would go to Ghisallo (Ocean Park) for Neapolitan pizza, Dan Modern for Chinese food, LaLa Rice for Thai and Somi Somi for Korean ice-cream in Sawtelle. I am also a huge fan of Birria Tacos and love the Birrieria Becerrito food truck on Venice Blvd. Favorite breakfast places are Blueys in Mar Vista and Cafe 50s in Santa Monica.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are countless people who have supported, helped and encouraged me on this journey. My partner and family have been my unwavering support system that continue to lift me up in challenging times and encourage me to continue to push myself in my career and life. I am forever grateful to them for giving me the opportunities that have led me to where I am today.
