We had the good fortune of connecting with Sayoung Park and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sayoung, what makes you happy? Why?
I am happiest when I draw alone. Putting what’s in my head on the canvas is such an amazing thing because this is something that only I can do. I like to draw what I like and love, either it exists in real life or in my imagination, it doesn’t matter. Of course, I think I need more research and practice to fully draw what’s in my head, but still, the process of art makes me happy. When I was asked about my hobby, I always answered drawing and painting since I was young. My life has always been about art, and I think even before I decided to be an artist I’ve always been drawing. Other than that, I like playing with dogs the most. I’m also happy when I walk on the beach or eat delicious desserts. Wouldn’t this be the case for everyone?

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Of course, I don’t think there’s anything easy. Fortunately, I had great parents who supported me, and with their support, I could experience many things. However, it was up to me to put everything into action. I had a dream to be an artist, but there were so many people in the world who had the same dream, and there were times that I was forced to compare myself with them. But after all, I thought that they were them, and I was me. No matter how many times I compare with them, I can’t be like them, and they can’t be me either. I was able to overcome the challenge, thinking that if I continue to do what I’m good at, I will get the results someday. Also, I liked painting too much to collapse on those things. There’s a famous Vincent Van Gogh’s quote, “If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” Whenever I thought about whether I could draw or not, I started drawing, and my thoughts disappeared. In the end, I think the reason I experienced the challenge is because I like this job so much. I think anyone who is an artist would all have this experience as well.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think first I’ll take my friend to a famous place in my neighborhood. We start with Urth Caffé in Pasadena, and we must go to my personal favorite place called Motto Tea Cafe. After that, go to Norton Simon Museum and take a look at great artworks. Next day we will go to Mary’s Market, which is at Sierra Madre, to have brunch, and if we go to L.A., I want to take my friend to the Grand Central Market and the Original Farmers Market. Both are places that I really like. After that, I have to go to LACMA as well and my other favorite place, Santa Monica. There are so many things I can do that I can’t organize my thoughts. But most of all, I want to take my friend to all the famous restaurants.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents. My parents have always supported me since I was young, and with their help, I could do whatever I wanted to do. From the time I wanted to go to an art school in Korea until I decided to study abroad, they were always there to support me. Thanks to them, I was able to make up my mind to be an artist by going through numerous challenges and experiences. Without my parents, I don’t think I would be here. I was able to reach the present day with their support, so I’m always grateful.
