We had the good fortune of connecting with Seda Anbarci and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Seda, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am originally from Turkey, where it’s not acceptable to become anything other than an engineer, doctor, or lawyer. So, I always tried to fit in and even studied Chemical and Biological Engineering in my bachelor years. I fought for only one thing in life, which was music. I finished music conservatory while studying Chemical and Biological Engineering and became a songwriter. That’s when I realized that I was a writer all along, but I’ve never had enough free environment to get to know myself. I wasn’t just a songwriter but a story creator.

My background taught me that we don’t always fit into one short definition. We all have multiple sides. A tennis player could also be an excellent singer and could be passionate about both tennis and singing. I was passionate about science, especially chemistry and biology, but I never truly enjoyed engineering. Finally, in my last year in college, I broke out of my shell and discovered who I was. Now I get to use my background and experience to write about characters who try so hard to fit into the definitions, but they get to know themselves and break out of their shells, just as I did.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After graduating from Chemical and Biological Engineering, I got an MFA in Screenwriting from New York Film Academy, Los Angeles, and became a screenwriter. I love creating TV series, feature films, and short films. Most of my stories focus on diverse characters who go on a journey to discover themselves and slowly break out of their shell to embrace their true selves. I am passionate about telling stories that are science fiction or fantasy, but I love all genres that convey an important theme.

I’ve been working in the industry for a year and a half. I got to where I am today with my creativity and my analytical mind that helped me dive deep into the industry’s production side. I think it is valuable to consider production elements right at the beginning of a project’s development stage.

I believe that screenwriting is a challenging career choice because it’s competitive, but in the end, we’re all here to tell our stories, relate to the audience, and give people a break from their real lives to enjoy some time. My biggest advice for screenwriters would be to listen and observe people to write something that represents and captures the audience. That’s what sets a storyteller apart from the crowd.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I fell in love with Los Angeles when I first visited the city back in 2017. That’s why I traveled here for my master’s degree. I love Santa Monica beach, Malibu beach, and Manhattan beach. Especially Manhattan beach is a bit quieter, so it’s great for chilling and recharging. I have a lot of favorite restaurants. For sushi, I would recommend Sugarfish at Santa Monica. I am in love with Veggie Grill and their yummy vegan food. Ramen over at Tsujita at Sawtelle Blvd tastes like HEAVEN! I would definitely recommend Lemonade when you want a healthy and tasty lunch. Olive & Thyme at Riverside and Urth Cafe at Melrose are my favorite two places to hang out with friends over coffee and delicious sandwiches. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shranjay Arora and Lissette Camacho have been a great support in my life and career.

Shranjay is a filmmaker based in Los Angeles and specializes in sci-fi stories. We wrote a short film called “SPOTTED,” which won festival awards in the 2020 Top Shorts, Global Shorts, Venice Shorts, and more.

Lissette Camacho is my writing partner. We work on stories about the struggles of diverse characters based on real-life experiences. Lissette is in the process of establishing her start-up production company.
