We had the good fortune of connecting with Selena Mars and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Selena, what inspires you?
I am inspired by the world around me. Inspiration can come from something I’ve experienced, my environment, or interactions. I draw from all of my real life experiences and use them in the creative process, whether I am writing music or producing a film.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My professional credits range from Film Actress to Producer, to Composer and Songwriter. I’m excited to share that I dropped a new single this summer called Perfect Storm. It features The Tennessee Three, Johnny Cash’s lifelong backing band as heard on classics like ‘I Walk the Line’ and ‘Folsom Prison Blues’.
I feel as though all the artists, friends, family and people who support me have all played a role in my success and have helped me grow. I’ve been able to learn so much from musicians and directors I met who saw my talent from the very beginning, and took me on tour or put me in a film. There’s so many artists I have been lucky enough to collaborate with!
The artist’s path is never an easy one. It takes a great deal of focus to persevere. Rejection is a part of the business that is never fun, but we persevere.
What I’d want people to know about my brand is that I put passion and care into every creative thing I put out into the world.
It has always been important to me to stay authentic and true to myself, even when other people tried to get me to change. They would try to persuade me to go with certain trends or do something that was uninspiring to me. I’ve been asked to do things on set that were not in the script that I didn’t want to do. I was told by a music executive I was too old to do music at age 27. People will tell you that you have to be limited to one artistic medium or genre, but if you feel passionate about doing more than one thing, you can do it and do it all well. In the end, I think you have to be true to yourself and who you are as an artist. Don’t let other people define you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many cool and eclectic places I love! I think Los Feliz and Silver Lake could definitely take a day or two to explore. I’d hit The Hollywood Roosevelt for cocktails and the pool. I always enjoy Smorgasburg, The Grove and The Fashion District. Malibu too!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my Grandmother. She always fully supported anything artistic that I wanted to do.
