We had the good fortune of connecting with Selin Ozoglu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Selin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was to get a sense of freedom and have a creative outlet. I have always been focused on academics and starting a career to the point where I lost sense of my creativity. After starting my business I was able to restore that aspect of my life and I was also able to give back to the earth through it. I am a big believer in sustainability and my business is rooted in it. I partnered with One Tree Planted early on and I plant a tree for each order I receive. I also strive to use the best materials for all my work to create long lasting pieces.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is rooted in sustainability and I am beyond grateful that I can give back to the earth while also creating delicate pieces that add to each individuals story. I focus on being as sustainable as possible through materials, tools, supplies, and most importantly donating a portion of my earnings to planting trees to aid in the reforestation efforts around the world. I love knowing that every piece I make has a special spot in someone’s life and they can create memories while wearing them as well.
I got to where I am by being consistent and focusing on bettering myself. This journey has not been easy, but it has been fulfilling and very eye-opening. When I started my business back in September I had a few goals and ideas that quickly grew into what Sira is today. I had so many supportive friends helping me out and encouraging me along the way, and it was this support that allowed me to overcome any challenges that came my way.
I’ve learned that juggling the many things that go on behind the scenes of a small business can be exhausting and overwhelming at times and the best thing to do is to take a little break to rejuvenate. It’s very easy to get sucked into the perfect world that is portrayed on social media, but it is more than okay to take a step back and realize that everyone displays their highlight reel and it is more than okay to take a break and relax. Only then will you find new ideas and inspiration for yourself.
My main goal with my business and life in general is to try my best to make sure that I share positivity and gratitude with every connection I make and to leave the earth better than we found it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My personal favourite spots in the city are place immersed in nature and anywhere you can see the water. I would plan a trip in accordance with that in mind and make sure that every restaurant was in view of water or nature and every outing took place outdoors and not cooped up inside.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is definitely to my grandma, she was the one that originally got me interested in jewelry making, she supplied me tools and various supplies for me when I was younger and encouraged me to pursue it as a hobby and creative outlet. If she hadn’t opened my eyes to the possibilities at such a young age I would not have picked it up again and created this beautiful small business.
