Meet Seungjin Lee | Physital Fine Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Seungjin Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Seungjin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From now on in the future in human society, and more digital technology we didn’t know before will come and have an effect and change the face of our lives, so I want to explain that multiple interface relation phenomenon through artworks in several ways.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is not stereo-type fine art nor digital art; my style would be between phenomenon or combined spectrum effect by two of them or even neither of both. My art career started from those confusing. I got emotional when I was a student at an art university in Japan. I had wanted to be a designer or illustrator, but I finally went to a digital art course for several life situation reasons. There, I had new experiences I never had before, such as programming art learning or kinetic and digital technology learning creation ways. Those look cool and futuristic creation ways, but I felt they would someday be taken by technology itself, and I wonder what the true meaning of human creation is. Even society around me has also changed many suspects, such as smartphones everyone has started to use, and a new lifestyle is based on digital platforms such as pop-ups, YouTube, and live streamers. I began to want to spend effort on making new creations, concepts confusing feelings in the spectrum between digital technology and human society. I am from Korea and spent a lot of time in Japan. I felt too conservative in both countries to make new creations, so I came to NY, where people talk about new creations that have constantly been innovating in history. For 10 years now, I have made small art movement scenes with similar concept artists I met in NY. It was challenging to maintain this lifestyle without being surrounded by so many supporters. It is essential to take balance and self-notice in an ever-changing society through hyper-fast and mass information from digital platforms and new emerging digital technologies.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I recommend, of course, art places in NY. In Brooklyn, especially the Bushwick area, you can see colossal graffiti and street art and check real local NY artists’ live shows and performances. Galleries in Lower East Manhattan always allow you to get inspiration and enjoy Chinatown’s great taste and reasonably-priced foods. My organizing DigiAna Studio is in LIC Queens, close by MOMA PS1, an area that is easy to come from Manhattan and Brooklyn; if you try to visit, I am always welcome to introduce artworks shown as permanent in the studio made by NY-based artists based on digital and non-digital spectrum intersection concepts.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One of my happiness is that there are so many people I have. I appreciate your support not only in my art career but also in lots of aspects of my life. DigiAna Group, my organizing artist group, consists of artists with similar looks to my work concept, concentrating on making creations on the theme of digital and non-digital multisession mixing; in this group, I worked and collaborated with more than 50 artists and art working people, they gave me lots inspiration and still always help me to keep this group can be good community, such as Mike Romeo, Tommy Mintz, Roman Kalinovski, Wamoo, and so many others. I also have a great manager, Alexander Michaelson, who supports my art career and even helps me to stay in the United States as an artist from a foreign; his role in my life is not only as a manager but also as a good friend and life supporter. And I can’t live without my wife Mariko’s everyday love, support, and understanding of my art passion.
