We had the good fortune of connecting with Shambhavi Raj and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shambhavi aka Sham, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s your definition for success?
Success is something that has no absolute definition to it. Everyone has their own version of success and there is never a right or a wrong answer. Some believe that success is about becoming rich, whereas others define it as having a set amount of material possessions. However, I believe that success is about achieving an aim or a goal for oneself. As much as I have big dreams and ambitions, I personally like to set small goals for myself. For instance, it could simply be a goal to learn how to bake salmon or to finish up with recording and mastering by a certain date or even just to complete 10,000 steps a day; all these intents are a blend of little things and when I am able to accomplish them, that is “success”! Over the years, I have understood that abstaining to connect success to small things first and then to big goals can leave a person disappointed and unsatisfied. So, success, according to me, is a set of small achievements on the trail of growth and progress.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
To start off, I am an artist and it has been 5 years since I started working on my music professionally, even though I have been singing since when I was around 2 years old. I love listening to all genres of music, be it House or Reggaeton or Indie. In fact, I am always very ardent about adding elements of music from different parts of the world and that really makes me very excited about my work. However, it is never an easy journey but I am where I am today because of learning, taking risks, hardwork and determination. I love what I do and this gives me happiness and peace. But of course, with every dream comes fallbacks and failures which interestingly, have taught me so much more than my achievements. They have given me perspective and persuasion to do better. One thing I would like to say is that always celebrate your wins but also learn to take failures as they will only make you better and stronger. I want the world to know that in reality, dreams are not like a bed of roses but if you really love what you do, nothing can stop you from getting to where you want to be!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend visited me for a week, I would take them to some of my favorite food spots in the city. Squirl, Mercado, Met Her at a Bar, Gracias Madre, Broken Shaker, Harriet’s, and Cheesecake Factory (one can never go wrong with it!) are some of my go-to places! To hang out, I would recommend going to Universal Studios (only if they are in a mood to spend an entire day at a theme park), Walk of Fame, Santa Monica, Grand Central Market or even just getting coffee from Alfred Coffee or Menotti’s. If they are interested in checking out not-so-historical museums, then Mods and the Broad are always a good idea. Lastly, to explore nightlife, E.P & L.P, The Bungalow, Perch or The Standard would be on the go-to list.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few people who I have to give credits to: Firstly, I’d like to give a huge shoutout to my parents for being such a rock solid support system. I am who I am because of them. Secondly, I have to thank my best friends (you know who you are!) for always being there and rooting for me. Next of course goes a big shout out to Brandon for being so wonderfully supportive and for teaching me so much about music. Last but not the least, I want to thank my inspirations, Selena Gomez and Dua Lipa for being so incredible at what they do.
