We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanay Morant and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanay, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
I recently watched a documentary on netflix about a film based on an iconic female singer from the 20’s. Although to her this wasn’t a quote but it was definitely something she lived by. “If you don’t play by your own rules, then you lose.” That one statement affected me in a lot of different ways. I started to see life in a different perspective. Not being afraid to make the next day what I wanted it to be. Life became something I wanted to creatively explore and not just live. I became open and vulnerable. Doing so helped me a lot with my art. You guys will definitely get a taste of this with my new single “Cream & Suga” (with the amazing “Veetchy”) dropping in a few weeks. Until then keep listening to “Let Loose ft. Shanay Morant”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always just stood out. I’ve always been unique and being naturally different is hard to do when you don’t know what you possess. Once you figure out what’s special about you, the journey starts to be about emptying everything that you’ve got inside of you. That’s what my journey and my art is about. With my acting, I convey real life, and real experiences. With my music I convey real life, real love, and the real me. Everything I do is authentic and I’m teaching others it’s ok to be authentic too.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take them to the beach. The beach makes you feel good about life. You just sit back and reflect on life and how you got where you are. Play games, eat good food and enjoy good company. The Santa Monica Pier is the place to be. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a big shoutout to the one and only Veetchy. Working with him has really given me an endless amount of confidence in myself and my creative process. He was awesome enough to make me a feature on his most successful single and now we’re working on an album together.
