We had the good fortune of connecting with Haley Joelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Haley, what principle do you value most?
There’s a couple values and principles I try to live by – kindness, honesty, and vulnerability. I know it sounds cliche, but you never know what someone is going through, and how a simple act of kindness can impact them. And of course being kind is so easy, it actually takes less muscles to smile than it does to frown!! But another thing that I think is just as important is honesty and vulnerability, which go together in my mind. Lately I’ve been posting my music online and I was so surprised that it was the songs that are so explicitly personal about me and situations I’ve been in that have done the best. People relate to them the most, which is starting to make sense to me now. We all go through the same things, and because I was honest and vulnerable through my songs, I guess people really related in their own way. And in turn we all feel less alone because of that.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So basically I write songs every day, and I’ve been writing since I was seven or eight (I’m 21 now). I think what sets me apart from others is how honest I’m willing to be in my songs, which can be good and bad hahaha. The only reason I’d say it’s “bad” is because I’m exposing a lot of things about myself in my songs, but I think that’s really cool because I know that we all go through the same things. So I hope it makes people feel less alone, like the music I listen to does for me. And it’s worth it to talk about things that a lot of people are afraid to, because I know if I’ve been through it or thought about it, then other people have too. I’m a story-teller and that’s what I’m most proud of 🙂 Getting to where I am today definitely wasn’t easy but I’ve loved every step of the way, and I know now that it was all necessary. I’ve always thought about how music has impacted me, and that I want to do that for other people. That got me through the challenges. And also developing a good work ethic lol. I’ve learned that it’s easy to do what everyone else is doing, but at the end of the day you have to listen to your gut. My gut tells me to write real stories and put emotion into everything I write. So that’s what I’m doing 🙂

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh my gosh I love this question!!! The first place I would take them is Viva Rancho Cantina in Burbank… it’s a saloon and it’s the best place ever. My friends and I went there all the time pre-pandemic and we’d just sing karaoke all night. It makes you feel like you’re not even in LA, and that’s my favorite part. But of course I would also hit The Den in West Hollywood, that’s a classic and their pizza is… mind-blowing. I would take them to Abbot Kinney in Venice and walk around all day there, and of course go to the beach. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to shoutout my parents. If it wasn’t for their unconditional love and support I probably wouldn’t have had the courage or the resources growing up to even be in the music industry at all – I’m so thankful. But I also want to dedicate this shoutout to my friend Jonny Shorr. He listens and gives me feedback on every song I send him and is the most talented writer I’ve ever met. I’m honored to work with him and call him a friend. Also he’s been keeping all my stuff in his house since I moved out of my apartment, cause I’ve been home in another state since the pandemic started. So he’s a real one.
