We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharon Cunningham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Wanted to do something I enjoyed doing & provide food I grew up on to my community. After battleling breast cancer its my belief you only live once and there was no better time to start my business
What should our readers know about your business?
I have a creole/cajun restaurant. It is the only full service restauant of its kind in our area. So being that I have the only place for families in my community to come and have some good creole/soul food with a family atmosphere sets me apart from other restaurants in the area.
I actually had a restaurant 13 years ago, and got the itch to try at it again breast cancer put a halt to it & once I overcame that I just went for it. With the help of my mom and support from husband & kids we made a dream a reality. It definitely has not been easy especially when you considered we opened 2 weeks before COVID, so learning how to make adjustments due to COVID restrictions. We landed a contract with the county to feed senionrs 3meals a day 7days a week which sustained us. Im still learning, adjusting on what it takes to run/operate a restaurant. Learning the importance of having effective systems in place and enforcing them with staff.
I want the world to know that I am an overcomer, ive had to face breast cancer head on & then covid both I could of quit but Im pressing to be the best version on me. To be an example for my kids and even my employees not to quit believe in yourself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Not much to do in my area but we are close to San Diego, start with breakfast at Snooze in La Jolla & then so spend a day at beach, then a trip to Disneyland go eat at Roscoes, another day spent at Glen Ivy spa go to dinner at Taps, Spend another day at Murrieta day spa then dinner at Gambling Cowboy
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom, husband and kids have all played a huge role in the starting of my/our business
