We had the good fortune of connecting with Shay Keys and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shay, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work life balance evolved from what I deemed a “comfort zone “… to a regimented schedule.
In the beginning, sure, you’ll run into writer’s block and it won’t be the most comfortable and convenient time to create. And you may feel that in your comfort zone and in your convenience is where you’re at your best, however in the real world, with deadlines, schedules and release dates, there is no “comfort zone”
No one cares about your creative comfort zone. Produce, or get out produced. It’s just that simple.
In my field, there is an unspoken competition.
While your collaborators and friends will praise your work, you have to keep in mind there is someone who is willing and ready to take your spot at any given moment.
I say that to say, not to operate out of a state of scarcity, but operate out of a state of uncomfortably and regimented discipline.
Greatness comes from consistency and perfect practice.
With consistency and practice, you won’t have time for writer’s block or only creating in your “comfort zone”.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from the field is my love for cinema. I know that sound a little strange but its really helpful and a great place to draw inspiration from. I can invoke a particular feeling from a scene from a movie into a song and transport you to that moment. It’s magical.
Creating a feeling is what music is all about. I see musicians as magicians in that sense.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hahaha I don’t know where to start. I’m such a homebody! I need someone to show ME around.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is a two fold answer. I’d like to dedicate my shout out to my wife and my mentor.
First my wife, who uplifts me and puts the proverbial battery in my back when I need it the most. She’s there to keep me focused and understanding the ultimate goal of my efforts.
Secondly my mentor, Diego. He is the
one grounding me and helping me understand the importance of making room for the artist and that music, is a collaborative effort between the artist and producer.
