We had the good fortune of connecting with Shayla the Artist and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shayla the Artist, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Consistency and a “Do it Now” attitude. Once I put away fear and decided to express myself through music, I made a commitment to myself to not stop creating and do everything with a sense of urgency. If an idea enters my mind, I have to start working on it as soon as possible. Why wait? Implement now!!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an independent R&B singer and songwriter from San Jose, CA, based in Los Angeles. I’ve released 2 albums that I’m very proud of. I’m deeply involved in all of my projects from the details of the music, to the mixing, to the promotion and marketing. I’ve learned that it is important to know and run your business as a musician. It can be tough to manage as an independent but you have to stay on top of how your content is being presented to the public, check your analytics, and keep striving for the next accomplishment.

I believe that I’m a force to be reckoned with because of my attention to knowing my business.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is kind of a hard question because things are just beginning to open up but I definitely would do the following:

1. Visit a hiking trail
2. Have a Boozy Brunch
3. Visit a Museum
4. Lay out on the beach
5. Find a live music event
6. Shopping!!

I love music events. I’m constantly looking for intimate music events to attend. It’s what feeds my soul and inspires me to listen to other aspiring artists. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my husband, Sylvanus (@artgonerogue). He’s been consistent in working toward his gift in multimedia artistry for many years. I admire him for that and have watched him grow tremendously. He’s always been there to motivate me and tell me the things that I don’t necessarily want to hear but need to hear.
