We had the good fortune of connecting with SHDW and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi SHDW, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I’d say the most important factors behind any of my previous & future successes are my integrity, followed by my desire to learn. I believe in doing right by people because it’s the right thing to do & I want that to be my reputation in an industry that has been referred to at times as corrupt. Plus, it’s always fun challenging myself to do something different or develop a new skill.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My primary art is rap music. I’ve been writing/recording/performing raps since the 6th grade when I fell in love with the art form. Initially rap was a means of catharsis for me where I could just let out any thoughts/emotions I had trouble verbalizing or communicating in other ways. Over time my sound & style has grown but allowing myself to be mentally & emotionally honest in my music has been the constant.
While I’m not nearly where I’d like to be professionally, I have grown to appreciate the challenge of having to convince people to believe in you and your art the way that you do when creating it. In coming to appreciate that, I also had to learn that it’s okay if some folks don’t like/connect with my art. Learning that allowed me to refocus on making the art that I could be proud of rather than trying to please everyone.
What I would like the world to know about me, my art & my creative goals is that you should expect the unexpected. I’m a chaotic thinker with huge dreams and the support from my team to see them through & I hope that you all can be apart of the journey!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being that from Baltimore, we’d absolutely have to go to the Aquarium in the inner harbor since I love aquatic wildlife & the jellyfish exhibit is fire. Definitely would have to have chicken boxes one day (from Great Panda in Church Square) & crabs another. I love food so we’d also hit Northeast Market, I always get the same cold cut but there’s a good amount of options. If they’ don’t have the itis then a little time on one of the trails that runs through the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I gotta shout out my mom first because she’s nothing short of amazing & secondly my bro/manager Lenn for the years of rocking by my side on this journey. Also all of my good friends that I’ve ever bounced ideas off of or sent early drafts of songs to.
