Meet Sheena Gao | Social Media Developer, Violinist, Fashion Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheena Gao and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sheena, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk-taking, for me, has always been rooted in alignment and analysis—never recklessness. I view risk as a necessary and strategic part of growth, both personally and professionally. I take calculated risks by evaluating potential outcomes, weighing both short- and long-term consequences, considering my passions, and ensuring the effort aligns with my values and long-term vision.
Throughout my life, I’ve taken many risks—some self-initiated, others born out of necessity. One of the biggest was uprooting my life from a successful career in China to start anew in America. I transitioned from a stable corporate fashion role to building my own creative brand, International Citizen, and later expanded into costume stylist for major labels like Capitol Records and Interscope, working on music videos. From fashion, I shifted into music—transforming from a classical violinist to an electric rock violinist—and eventually into social media content development.
Each of these transitions came with risks: financial, emotional, and professional. But I’ve always understood that to progress on this life journey, we must evolve. Growth requires movement and transformation. I evaluated the potential rewards—freedom, impact, fulfillment—and moved forward with a clear plan, diversified income streams, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. These risks have paid off by revealing my resilience, adaptability, and a deeper sense of purpose.
I believe thoughtful risk-taking expands our capacity. It has brought me greater opportunities, deeper relationships, and clarity in my mission. Even when things haven’t gone exactly as planned, each step has refined my direction.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would describe myself as a creative force whose art is an ever-evolving fusion of music, storytelling, fashion, and advocacy. I express myself through many forms—whether it’s performing electric violin on stage, composing music that speaks to the soul, creating content that amplifies vegan and ethical living, or designing fashion that honors global consciousness. What sets me apart is this intersection—where classical training meets rebellion, where beauty serves purpose, and where every creation is rooted in compassion and integrity.
I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve never boxed myself in. From co-founding International Citizen, a socially conscious fashion brand promoting the ethos of Live, Love, and Travel—despite the challenges of competing against corporate giants, we made a name for ourselves in the industry. I’m also proud of my work as a wardrobe stylist and costume designer, contributing to high-profile projects with Capitol Records, Interscope, Columbia Records, I’ve had the honor of collaborating with artists like Selena Gomez, Zedd, The Chainsmokers, and Jamie Scott on their music videos.
As a performer, my journey has spanned classical and contemporary stages—from playing with the “Mozart Twins” and the “V3 Classical Trio” to rocking out with The Vaticants as an electric violinist. My work now integrates music, fashion, and purpose—a path far from traditional, but entirely true to me.
Most recently, I founded International Citizen Productions (ICProductions), where I’ve directed and produced music videos, branding content, and commercials for clients such as The Vaticants, Ferrari, and Fast Cars LTD. I also serve as a Social Media Manager and Multimedia Content Creator, leveraging my creative vision to craft stories that resonate across platforms.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Los Angeles for a week, I’d plan an unforgettable mix of soulful conversations, scenic escapes, artistic inspiration, and delicious vegan cuisine. Here’s how I’d show them my L.A.:
Day 1 – Arrival & Welcome Dinner
Dinner at Crossroads Kitchen – This upscale, elegant eatery is perfect for a refined vegan dinner. We’d dive into deep, soul-nourishing conversation over their signature truffle tagliatelle or artichoke oysters.
Drinks at Melrose Umbrella Co. – A cozy, offbeat lounge adorned with vintage decor and quirky umbrellas. Their craft cocktails set the tone for an intimate, unforgettable week.
Day 2 – The Classic LA Experience
Morning hike at Runyon Canyon – One of L.A.’s most iconic trails, with stunning city views, celebrity sightings, and a lively local vibe.
Brunch at Lady Byrd Café – A charming spot surrounded by flowers and string lights—cozy, chic, and full of great energy.
Afternoon stroll through The Grove – Great for people-watching, boutique shopping, or catching a film at the theater.
Evening jazz at LACMA – Snap photos under the Urban Light sculpture, then enjoy live jazz on the lawn (seasonally on Fridays).
Day 3 – Hollywood Nostalgia & Nature

Meditation at Peace Awareness Labyrinth & Gardens – A hidden gem for spiritual reflection in the heart of the city.
Day 4 – The Coastal Escape
Scenic train ride to Santa Barbara – Nothing beats riding up the California coastline. We’d sip coffee and soak in the ocean views.
Lunch by the water in Santa Barbara – Followed by wandering through the Funk Zone art district or relaxing on the beach.
Evening in by the fireplace – Cozy up with Netflix, a bottle of wine, and takeout from Vegan Glory for a relaxed, soul-soothing night at home.
Day 5 – Art, Culture & DTLA Magic
Lunch at The Butcher’s Daughter (Melrose) – Trendy, plant-based, and oh-so-beautiful.
Coffee stop at Alfred Coffee (Melrose Place) – Chic, stylish, and one of the best people-watching spots in the city. “But first, coffee” never felt so right.

Stop by The Last Bookstore – A literary dreamland with whimsical book tunnels and eclectic local art.
Day 6 – Canyon Views & Modern Zen
Brunch at Café 27 – A treehouse-like eatery tucked into Laurel Canyon with sweeping views and peaceful vibes.
Canyon drive to Getty Villa – A serene retreat (currently temporarily closed, but worth watching for reopening), filled with ancient art and ocean views.
Dinner at Nobu Malibu – Elegant coastal dining with brilliant sunset views and refined, ocean-inspired vegan options.
Day 7 – Venice Vibes & Farewell
Morning at Venice Beach – Rent bikes and cruise along the boardwalk, then explore the stylish boutiques of Abbot Kinney.
Lunch at Plant Food + Wine – Serene garden patio and beautifully crafted vegan cuisine.
Golden hour at the canals – A peaceful moment of reflection before packing up.
Stop at Anima Mundi Apothecary – Magical herbal drinks to ground and uplift before closing out the trip.
Final dinner at Gracias Madre – A soulful send-off and toast to a beautiful week of memories.
This is the LA I love—an eclectic mix of art, nature, consciousness, and connection. It’s not just about the hotspots—it’s about the feeling, the flow, and the freedom to be your full self.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely—there’s no way I could be where I am today without the love, support, and inspiration of others. First and foremost, I want to dedicate my shoutout to my parents. Their courage to start over later in life and their unwavering belief in education, art, and resilience have deeply shaped who I am. My mother, a retired architecture professor, and my father, an architect, taught me the values of integrity, hard work, and imagination.
I also want to thank my best friend and business partner, Laura Krusemark. Together we co-founded International Citizen, a stylish brand rooted in ethical fashion and global consciousness. We’re also a violin and piano duo performing under the “Mozart Twins.” Her spirituality and creative fire continue to inspire me every single day.
I’m also endlessly grateful for my chosen family—a close-knit group of friends who are my backbone. They hold space for me creatively, emotionally, and spiritually. I owe so much to the artists, musicians, and mentors who’ve reminded me to stay authentic, lead with love and compassion. From artists to vegan activists, each of them has helped me step into my purpose.
