We had the good fortune of connecting with Sherrell Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherrell, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe the most important factor behind my success and the success of our brands, RastAfri Braid and Fs Wigs, are staying unique and optimizing teamwork. We set ourselves apart from other companies by connecting through unique styles, colors, and community. In addition, our brand’s success has manifested in a team atmosphere. It takes a team of like-minded people to build a successful and unique brand, and multiple people play their roles as we all provide support, diverse ideas, and creative energy. All positions are essential behind our brand. Success would not be present without individual resilience and synergy from our entire team.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When creating hair products, I always think of the excitement our customers feel when they apply RastAfri braid, a protective crochet style, or customize one of their favorite FS wigs. When creating color combinations, I also consider our color variations, how they will enhance multiple skin hues, and how radiant our consumers will glow from a little added hair confidence. I am most proud when people wear our products, and it’s incredibly uplifting to their mood and overall self-esteem. Day by day, understanding our customer’s preferences has allowed me to grow in my profession by acknowledging and studying different cultures and why they wear hair products and choose specific colors. Diversity in cultures and customers’ styling preferences opens your creativity when building a successful brand. I want the world to know that we make our hair products with the best fibers, honest artistry, and creative love.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to plan exciting adventures. If my best friend Carla of 22 years were visiting, I would first start with a spa day in Korea Town to ease her traveling jitters, followed by some fantastic authentic Korean food. Venice Beach and In-n-Out burger would be our next stops. Then, we would be off on a Hollywood adventure, the Getty and Wax Museum, and LA street tacos. We would end our week with a concert at the Crypto Center and a beautiful dinner at Yamishiros Hollywood.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My first recognition would go to my parents. They both instilled strong work ethics and integrity in me at a young age. In addition, they allowed me to express creativity in all art forms, especially my mother, Stephanie, who taught me how to do hair and started a boutique that allowed me to practice and perfect my hair skills. Secondly, my Chairman, Mr. Ryue Kim, hired me to work in his company at the very young age of 19, where I learned the other side of the hair industry and behind the scenes of creating hair products. Thirdly, my Vice President, John Chung, held my hand and guided me through the hair industry, and together through our synergy, we created history through hair fashion, colors, and unique styles. His knowledge of the hair industry, such as fibers, techniques, and marketing, combined with my knowledge and creativity with hairstyling, has created success in our brand. Lastly, my excellent mentor and President, Jinah Chung, has guided and supported me with business mentorship, relationship mentorship, Research, and development. She has taught me the hair industry through her phenomenal hair and stylish expertise. Finally, and an honorable mention, my best friend Carla, whose sound advice, witty sense of humor, clarity, and unconditional support have carried me through many challenging life decisions, allowing me to see the silver lining in every obstacle.
