We had the good fortune of connecting with Shimikia Hagins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shimikia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always enjoyed cooking for other people. I’d have family and friends request for me to make certain dishes for their parties, which then gathered the attention of outside people wanting me to cater their events.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my catering business in 2018. I love to cook, I start cooking at a very young age. I was always in the kitchen with my mom. I had to cook for my siblings, cooking became therapeutic for me when I became stressed or just going through something difficult. I started off cooking for family, friends and coworkers. I used to to take different kind of eggrolls to the my job and let my coworkers try them out. They told me how good they were and I should open up a restaurant. I couldn’t believe all the feedback, I was getting from people, so I started a catering business in 2018 where I workout of a shared commercial kitchen with other caterers and on occasion I will do a pop-up event. My mother always told me “You have to cook with love, so you can feed the soul.” I love cooking for the soul.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my friends come into town, I already have everything planned on where we are going . I like to set my home up and make it real comfortable for my friends. I like to cater to them as if they were at a 5 stars hotel. We will drive down the coast, go to the beach, and do a little shopping.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost. I would like to give thanks to God, for allowing me to be the woman that I am today. My mother Judy Morrow may she continue to rest in heaven. She was a superwoman who raised 20 kids, Yes, I said 20 kids. I’m the third oldest, so that means I was little mama. My mother was an amazing woman who she taught me how to cook, clean and take of my business and she always told me “Never to depend up on nobody but yourself. ” I like to also give thanks to my father for being tough on me, my grandparents for always being there for me. My kids; Clarence, Raveen, and Tisha. My brothers and sisters for always allowing me to be their big sister. My family and friends for always Believing in me. My supporters thank you all so much!
