We had the good fortune of connecting with Shoko Rice and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shoko, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I think anyone can succeed if you keep doing it right way and doing it continuously, but actually that’s the hardest thing to keep doing it. So many destructions and temptations in life easily set people off track.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I came from Japan, English is my second language and it was no way easy to become an actress in Hollywood. No one thought I’d become one. But I liked the idea of challenging for the hardest thing possible and proving people wrong.

So that’s the reason to stay motivated one more than anything but in the beginning almost 9 years ago, I was really struggling. I went to so many auditions but didn’t get any work. My english wasn’t good enough and acting skill wasn’t there. So I took a break from it and worked on my English, music and other things for few years.

When pandemic hit, I had so much time just for myself and it was almost a wake up call. I thought if you want to do acting, it is now or never. So I got a new head shot, hired private acting coach, took business marketing class and started to see the result and now I became working actress. It’s amazing and it worked!

It feels so rewarding. when I got a lead role in a feature film, I was so proud because I don’t know any other actor from Japan starred a lead role in a Hollywood feature film. I think it is encouraging to people from Japan and other countries trying to succeed in US.

I also sing and paint. each one are very important to me, they are different form of art but I’m expressing the same feeling and emotions. So I don’t put one thing over another,

The lessons I learned was, there is no shortcut in life or overnight success. it needs to be well planned and strategized. Have a vision and execute it. You have to have input so you can output.
And don’t compare to anyone else. embrace Youness! The world is waiting for you!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d definitely take my friend to Hollywood and historical hidden places I know around the town. hike to Hollywood sign, try some Japanese food on Sewtelle or Korean food in K town, also scenic drive in Malibu and get fresh seafood there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Toshu Fukami, he is philanthropist, shaman, businessman from Japan, he is my teacher and changed my life in so many ways!
