We had the good fortune of connecting with Shop Looks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shop Looks, what are you inspired by?
We are inspired by the sustainability movement of Generation Z. Many young adults and teenagers advocate for the end of climate change, which fast fashion heavily contributes to. The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. The factories used to create clothing spew chemicals into the air and water sources, just for the clothes people buy to be thrown out and end up in landfills or the ocean. On a daily basis we see people our age promoting change by adjusting their lifestyle to be eco-friendly. One of the many ways they do so is by purchasing pre-loved clothing. These are people who inspire us to keep educating & contributing to the change we want to see. One of our goals is to provide clothing that will suit changemakers no matter what their personal style is.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Shop Looks is a Black woman owned sustainable clothing company that was created and currently operating in Los Angeles, California. Our CEO Ashé Taylor originally started out with her own styling company, Looks by Ashé Taylor. Originally Ashé started with selling the clothing from the photoshoots she styled for, which is how she came up with the name “Shop Looks”. Ashé then began to sell clothing from her own closet, donations from friends and family members, and interesting pieces she saw at thrift stores. Many people see selling preloved clothing as a quick and easy way to make money on the side, but our CEO created Shop Looks by turning her passion into a business. Operating Shop Looks has helped us develop many habits that contributed to the success of our company. We have made it a habit to collaborate with our peers and sister company (Looks by Ashé Taylor) as much as possible. Not only do we learn from each other but collaborating has helped expose different demographics to each other’s business. Consistency is a difficult but very beneficial habit that has helped our company grow so much. We also try to be as consistent as possible. Consistency is a difficult but very beneficial habit that has helped our company grow so much. We make sure to post on our social media at least twice a day, host a pop up shop once a month, and release new items biweekly. Constantly putting ourselves out there has increased our engagement and helped accumulate customers and material to showcase for our brand. Keeping up with these habits have transformed Shop Looks into something bigger than we have imagined. The toughest lesson we had to learn while operating Shop Looks was that great things take time. Shop Looks has been around since 2018, and for the first two years of our existence our CEO was still transitioning from selling a service (her styling company) to selling a product. We relaunched Shop Looks on August 20, 2020 and was met with a lot of great feedback and reviews. In 2021 we had two successful pop-up shops, the first with Victoria Painter and her brand Midnight Muse and the second with Jasmine Renee the Label. We had to learn that we should never settle. Shop Looks is constantly growing, with the goal in mind that we are contributing to the change we want to see. The process will be worth it, we will keep pushing to grow. For those who are thinking about starting a business but don’t have enough money or support, do it regardless. Do it regardless of those negative thoughts and just start. Once you start, it will soon come together. That’s the same path we took with Shop Looks and look at how far we have come! Many times we have been told “Too many people are doing it, come up with something else” in regards to entering the fashion industry and creating our own brand. While there are thousands of different reselling brands and companies out there, every single one is special in its own way. There are millions of people in the world who have different interests and needs/wants. There will always be somebody who is interested in what you have to offer. We are so excited to continue to grow, meet like minded people, and find more ways to be sustainable. Shop with Shop Looks now!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many gems in Los Angeles! For good eats, I would definitely suggest going to get some amazing Mexican food from El Torasco’s or Casa Mayoral. We would also visit amazing Black owned restaurants like Underground Cafe, Simply Wholesome, and Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen. The best places to visit would be The Grove, Baldwin Hills scenic overlook, Venice Beach and the Santa Monica pier! There are also great thrift stores in Los Angeles, such as the Goodwill Southern California stores and the second hand shops in the Melrose District!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to shoutout Victoria Painter of Midnight Muse,Jasmine Renee of Jasmine Renee the Label, and Suede Williams at The Bay DTLA! We have watched them grow from very early on in their career of being a business owner. We would like to help them spread the word about their business because we are huge supporters.
