We had the good fortune of connecting with Shymeka Melendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shymeka, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Let’s first start off by saying I’ve been into beauty since I was a little girl! I was literally braiding hair at the age of 6. My mom and god mother was so amazed. They would always tell people “can you believe that meek can actually braid and it’s tight !” Lol. From there on my mom knew that I would grow up being into hair, makeup etc. I’ve always wanted to own a shop with my name on it. As a kid I use to do my friends hair in the school bathrooms, outside, or even in the hallway where we played at sometimes. It all started in high school, when I first began putting my all into my business. I never thought I would be where I am now ! I can say it wasn’t easy but it was well worth it. I took cosmetology courses while I was in high school so I could obtain my certification/license. I always thought starting my own business would be a hassle but what do you know I HAVE MY OWN BUSINESS. For starters I stopped telling myself what I couldn’t do. Everyday I practice some days I would stay up until 6 in the morning trying to accomplish something I had set. I had to break out of old/bad habits and start practicing good habits. Setting goals for yourself and accomplishing them in a timely manner. That’s something I did just to put myself under pressure. I learned that in the business field that I’m in most of the time a lot of people like myself may feel under pressure with some clients. If you practice working under pressure I can assure you that when the time do come it wouldn’t intimidate you at all. Organization is KEY ! This was a big deal for me because in the beauty industry there’s so much to offer. I had to learn to separate certain things so that I can have a clear vision. Now that I look back I’m happy I didn’t give up ! I’m happy that I kept pushing myself even when I had nothing ! Motivation is key you have to remain motivated through it all (The good, the bad, Relationships, friendships and family). Always remain focused and don’t allow things to distract you from becoming successful. Always remember your business is your baby! You keep your personal life separate from your business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m currently a nail tech. I also do hair, pedicures and lashes. I’m excited about expanding my business and helping other black techs in the industry. That’s something that seem to be a pull and tug in this industry. No one wants to help anyone become better because they’re afraid they might be better than them. I could never walk life with a mind set like that! I learned that not everyone in this industry is your friend nor friendly. Most are in it to win as if it’s a race but WE COULD ALL WIN ! I want the world to know about Meek Beauty Bar. I’m here to make you feel and look beautiful. This is a no judgement zone.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Currently I’m located in Atlanta, GA. If I had my friend come out to visit me we would definitely go for a spa date. There are a few places here in Atlanta that’s a beautiful site to see. Depending on the time of the year the botanical gardens is a great scenery. We could definitely go get some food from chef la fish fry, milk and honey, Hattie Marie’s, and the list goes on.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my mother Gloria Melendez for never giving up on me and supporting me no matter what. I also want to thank Ibaadah Sharif for opening me back up to the beauty industry and going after what I always wanted to do! She’s a amazing nail tech and very humble. I want to thank all of my clients if I could name each and every one individually I would but the list goes on and on. You guys are the reason as to why I keep pushing to perfect my craft. I love each and everyone one of you !
