We had the good fortune of connecting with Sienna Leone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sienna, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When I think about the risk I have taken in my life there are so many memories that come across my mind. Some of the scariest but most rewarding risks I have taken was going to boarding school at the age of fourteen, running for Miss Teenage British Columbia, moving to Los Angeles alone with only the idea and dream in my mind of making it as an on-camera entertainment host, to my first time hosting at a red carpet as an on-camera entertainment host.
Risk has been a big factor in some of the most crucial moments of my life. Would I be lying if I said risk didn’t scare me? Yes. Although, I can say that risks have truly been one of the most motivating factors that have pushed me in my life. The idea and thought of taking risks have always challenged me from a young age to even now. Risk has motivated me to fulfill some of my biggest dreams of mine. Growing up with my parents having an entrepreneurial background, I was taught at a young age that life is all about taking risks, it’s about what you do with the opportunities presented to you.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an on-camera/ social media host for a Gen Z entertainment company called Sweety High. I interview celebrities from Youtubers, Musicians, Actresses/ Actors, Business Owners, etc., as well as participate in some of the biggest movie junkets for films from Netflix, Warner Brothers, Disney, etc.
I think something that I am most proud of in my career is that I have worked hard to get to the point where I am today, which is interviewing some of my favorite Actors/ Actresses and Musicians I have grown up watching and loving. I am extremely proud of where I have come in the last two years and I am excited to see where I will be in two years from now.
I got to where I am today professionally by being persistent and never giving up. I moved to West Hollywood right after I graduated from The University of Arizona with only the hopes and dreams of being an on-camera entertainment host. With my families support and belief in me and simply my own belief in myself, I moved from Vancouver, Canada, took a job that would get me by for the time being, and day and night I worked hard and reached out to every entertainment outlet that was on my radar and handed out my reel and resume. Until finally, I landed an interview with Sweety High. Giving up wasn’t an option that I gave myself. My boss today, recognized my persistency and gave me the opportunity and within a few short months, I was an on-camera host in Hollywood! I always tell people who reach out for advice that are in my exact same position from just two years ago, is to simply be persistent. Persistency is what landed me my job.
It was not easy one bit. The amount of rejection that I faced, was extremely hard for me. It was my parents that kept me going by saying, ‘You know what Sienna, at least you got a response, that is great. Don’t dwell and don’t be sad, just keep going and keep reaching out. Onto the next.’ I did exactly that. Especially in my industry where it is truly so competitive, I did not ever take the rejection to heart, I took it as motivation. I pushed myself and challenged myself to send emails, meet up for coffee with people who are in my industry, take phone calls and learn from other journalists how they started and I took note and applied it to my outreach.
The biggest thing I want people to take from my story is to never dwell on rejection. Use the rejection to fuel you to keep going and never ever give up. You truly can do and become whatever you want if you put your mind to it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
An itinerary of what I would have planned if my best friend was visiting would be morning workouts in which we would either do Runyon Canyon for a hike or hit up a Pilates class (shoutout Forma Pilates & Carries Pilates for kicking my butt!) . Then I would take her to some of my favorite restaurants in the city like Cafe Angelino, Mauros Cafe, Craigs, Greenblatt’s Deli, Matsuhisa (the list would go on, I am SUCH A FOODIE!). Then on the weekends, I would take her to the Sunday Melrose Farmers Market at the plaza, and lastly, I would show her the Melrose Trading Post! I l also love taking drives up Muholland Drive or even to Malibu to watch the sunset, so that would be on the itinerary as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout for sure goes to my family first and foremost. Without my mom, dad and brother I wouldn’t be the person I am today. My family throughout every monumental moment in my personal life and career-wise, have always been by my side to support me and encourage me.
I look at my brother and how he takes his career so seriously, even growing up with his hockey career, he taught me to keep pushing. Even if it’s the hardest thing I will ever do, just keep going and don’t give up. He has taught me to keep bettering myself, as, throughout the years of looking up to him, he has done that for himself. I don’t think he knows how much of a role model he is to me, and he has been for me, (but hopefully, after this he will) I truly thank him for that.
I can’t even thank my parents enough, every time I have wanted to go for something in my life, they have never said ‘No Sienna, maybe that is not the best idea’. They have always said ‘Okay, so what are you going to do to get yourself there, and how can we support you?’ They have been my toughest and most honest critics. They have supported me in what I want to do personally and in my career. They have sacrificed for my brother and me and now it’s my turn to show them what I can do with my career. I hope my parents look at me and my work and I make them proud.
I hope I carry through my life as being as kind as my mom, as brave as my dad, and as hard as a worker as my brother.
Mom, Dad, and Luca if you are reading this, thank you for shaping me into the person I am today. I truly owe all my success to you guys. Without your words of encouragement and belief in me, I would not be doing what I am doing today, and for that, I will forever be grateful for you three.
Lastly, I also want to shout out my incredible best friends. Without their support, I would be no where. Shoutout Ashlee, Rebecca, Hunter, Nika, Nicki, Avalon, Ellie and SO.MANY.MORE. I feel your love and support and I value and appreciate every single one of you and just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything. I truly am the luckiest person in the world to have you all as my best friends and support system. Your love is what keeps me going!
