Meet Sky Cowans (Sky Life) | Video Creator & Community Leader

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sky Cowans (Sky Life) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sky, what matters most to you?
Honesty is everything. Being honest may be challenging and uncomfortable in the short term, but it makes everything easier in the long term. So often we try to avoid being 100 percent honest because of fear. We don’t want to hurt someone or say the wrong thing, so we may tell white lies to avoid sharing the truth. But sharing the honest truth in a loving way is the key to building trust. It’s not always easy, but I do my best to practice radical honesty as much as possible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I create documentary-style videos on my YouTube channel Sky Life that explore the realms of wellness, spirituality, and alternative lifestyle. The mission of Sky Life is to share powerful stories about magnificent people and places to inspire the shift from judgment to curiosity, build communities, and awaken human consciousness.
At my core, I’m a storyteller and an artist, and videos are my medium of creation. I love characters and a lot of my content focuses on fascinating people who are dancing to the beat of their own drums. I am also very inspired by those who seem to have transcended “the matrix” or typical societal norms and are living in an alternate reality.
What sets me apart is that I am entering communities and spaces that may be considered on the “fringes” of society. I’ve spent time living with hippie communes, a traveling circus, Satanists, witches, wizards, vampires, multi-millionaires, and Shamans. If there’s anything I’ve learned from entering these spaces, it’s that there is always something to learn beyond the stereotypical surface-level perceptions we may have of others.
I have also tried lots of different healing modalities and have documented myself experiencing deep emotional processes through various alternative therapies including breathwork, past life regression, darkness therapy, and even ketamine therapy.
Getting to where I am today has definitely not been easy. It’s taken facing my fears over and over again and continuously opening my mind. These videos are also not easy to produce. It takes a massive amount of planning, time, energy, resources, and many hours of editing to put them together. I started with 0 subscribers on YouTube and for the first two years it was a side hustle that made no money. I worked every night and weekend to make it happen and I didn’t make any money for the first two years. Finally, I started gaining traction and slowly but surely I built this into my full-time job. It’s been almost 5 years since I started and now it’s a real business.
Community building has been a huge part of this. Throughout the past year, we started a Discord for my online community (The Vibe Tribe) for people to connect in a deeper way. We’ve offered tons of free online events for the community and now this is transferring to in-real-life experiences. In January, I led my first IRL retreat in Costa Rica with an incredible group from The Vibe Tribe. It was a wellness adventure retreat and it was incredibly powerful and successful. Each member of the retreat left having had such a profound transformation and it was a gift to facilitate and witness. I am excited to lead more IRL events and retreats in the future!
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that our judgment keeps us divided and limited, but curiosity opens us up to growth, learning, and deeper connection.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If it’s summertime, we are definitely going to a Cinespia moving screening at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I spend most of my time on the West Side in Venice so a trip to Abbott Kinney is a must including Salt & Straw for ice cream. On a Sunday, we’re going to Kirtan & yoga in Topanga and brunch after at the Inn of the Seventh Ray, followed by some thrifting. Time in nature is also essential so we will be hitting up Solstice Canyon and doing a beach day in Malibu. A trip to the Venice Loveshack for Camilla’s incredible vegan bread & pastries is very important. Ecstatic Dance LA is also a must.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out to my alma mater, Elon University for teaching me such key foundational skills in video journalism, storytelling, and content creation through the School of Communication’s hands-on approach to learning and career-building. I can’t thank my professors, peers, and mentors from Elon enough for all of their support. There’s a huge network of Elon alumni in Los Angeles, which also helped me so much when I was just starting out in this city.
