We had the good fortune of connecting with Sondra Tillman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sondra, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting La Tierra Sagrada, was inspired by a lack of clean options. I suffered severe health issues that caused hair loss and I did not trust anything on the market. As a hairstylist between NY and LA, I used hair products on myself and my clients that I believed were the best haircare available, however, when I actually started looking at ingredients and researching the toxicity levels, I was shocked! I wanted a clean hair care line that was salon quality, that focused on the health of the scalp and the hair. As a hairstylist I wanted to create a line that would be easy to transition my clients over to, that delivered the same results, if not better, as the same off the shelf products they were using.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Launched in 2014, La Tierra Sagrada (which translates to ‘The Sacred Earth’) is a truly unique line of holistic hair care products made with high integrity plant-based ingredients intended to bring us back to the sacred healing rituals of our hair. Every ingredient is free from harmful chemicals, and other toxins, and is grown and harvested with the utmost care and preparation so as not to disturb any ecosystems. Each product serves a distinctive purpose while working toward one unified goal:
to connect us with ourselves while enriching and restoring hair to its healthiest natural state using sacred plant medicines that have been available to us for many, many years. With this goal in mind, I single-handedly created every product in the line over the last 8 years and remain heavily involved in the production process. Though in recent years it has been a bit more challenging with supply chain issues, inflation, and shortages, I keep moving forward to provide the highest integrity product, as I know believe need it. There have definitely been many times where I was ready to walk away and just do hair as I’ve always done, but it’s so hard to find another line out there that does what this line does, so it’s been hard to walk away.
Today, several brands establish themselves as ‘self care’―but what does that really
mean? I created La Tierra Sagrada products after experiencing hair loss and needing a holistic approach to healing my scalp and hair. I wanted to focus on the importance of creating
intentional ritual around hair care for myself, my clients, my community and all who have experienced what I went through. Hair loss is so common, and we don’t educate enough about the ways to help bring it back to its healthiest natural state. My intention is to help educate others on the importance of taking time out from our busy schedules and the daily noise around us to create a dedicated space to care for
both our hair and our wellbeing. With this in mind, every product in the line is
designed with an intentional ‘Hairemony’― a ceremony around our hair and self.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Im a Mom of a 2 year old now with another one on the way, so prior to babies, my recommndations would be quite different, but we still enjoy a lot with our little one- My favorite things to do in the city:
I live on the east side in Echo Park, so most of what I do is over here..
If weather is nice, we do hikes in Elysian Park, since it is right outside our door.

I love going to cookbook and grabbing some lunch for a picnic. Some of my favorite parks/gardens are Descanso and Huntington Gardens, they are so beautiful and a sweet escape from the city.

Any time we are on the west side we go to Gjusta. It is hands down the best spot in LA, in my opinion. Such an incredible selection and the Gjelina group takes clean food to the next level.
Sometimes we grab a meal to go and head to the beach and enjoy some yummy food while we swim and play.

Another fun thing we do, is a late afternoon beach adventure to either Malibu or Topanga. We cut through Topanga Canyon to drive home and stop for dinner at Endless Color Pizza. It is so good! And awesome for kids!

On hot summer days, we love going to our favorite neighborhood spot-Solar Return. They make the most beautiful raw, vegan treats! From ice cream pops to cakes and more! It’s so nice to get a healthy option for ice cream!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout and thank every single individual that has supported me and this business from day one! I wouldn’t have started the business without the interest of my community, and the results so many people shared throughout the years. This is what keeps me going. I want to thank my husband for stepping in in 2017, after doing it all myself from 2014. He saved me from drowning and closing the business down completely. I want to thank my sweet baby girl who for the past 2 years has been another reminder of why I keep doing what I’m doing.
