We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen A Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephen A, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson I’ve learned for my business is cultivating relationships. The word ‘cultivate’ reminds me of growing a garden which I like a lot. It takes deliberate care to grow a garden. I find when there is deliberate care in my relationships, authenticity develops. I find myself able to operate at a very high level when working in the context of authenticity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is music and someone asked me recently, “What drives you to do music?” I instinctively answered, “Somebody else is driving that bus!”

So I do it because I literally have to do it. I need to be around it as much as possible in any way shape or form 24/7.

My father likes to tell the story of how I learned to scale his enormous console stereo at 9 months old and play records.
So I’v been moved by sound from a very early age.

That formative experience turned into an insatiable drive to make music. I want to share that experience with others in any way I can.

Right now sharing my music comes in three modalities.

One is working with Sofiya Turin who has become a good friend and collaborative partner. We began making what we call Poem Pieces in October 2020. They’re like mini-movies of inspiration. This collaboration which we call Sofiya & Sejen is geared toward the Wellness community. We do a variety of things within this collaborative space from combine poetry and music, facilitate breath-work, meditation and sound-baths.

Secondly, playing drums in the Pink Floyd Tribute band, Continuous Signal, has provided the chance to go deeply into one of the cornerstones of rock music. It is a great learning experience for me in that the drum parts are straight forward yet the song structure is non-conventional. This is music that requires a lot of deliberate attention from the drummer and that challenge is very interesting to me!

The third modality is being a drum teacher. Teaching is a very natural fit for me. My students range from 4-60 years old.
I tend to get excited during lessons and become quite animated encouraging! This is just because I want to support my students in every way I know how. I love getting to share what I know for their drumming journey.
Really, I’m teaching music. How it all fits together, instead of just drum technique or how to play fast, I’m teaching how to play drums in a musical context. I think this really gets a across and helps them learn.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite L.A. spots are Descanso Gardens, Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Getty Villa in Malibu and most recently the Orpheum Theater in DTLA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Tim Riley and Keith Horn are two people that definitely deserve a shoutout. Both composers and exemplary musicians. In lieu of mentors in the traditional sense, these two gentlemen have really have been there for me in all areas of support and encouragement along this musical journey.
