We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Blickenstaff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephen, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I can remember I’ve always loved drawing. I can’t imagine not doing it. It just made sense to make career choices that would enable me to support myself doing what I love to do.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since I was a kid in the early 60s I was obsessed with monsters and dinosaurs and I never grew out of it. The art that I create is totally influenced by the comic books, movies, and toys that I’ve collected and surrounded myself with since my childhood. I especially loved the artwork of artists like Basil Wolverton, Bernie Wrightson, and Ed Roth. I’ve been collecting their work and studying it all my life. I never really set out to make a profession of my art. It just sort of happened and I would still be drawing and painting the same things today even if I never made any money from it. It’s a very deep passion. I suppose my art probably appeals to like-minded people who share my same interests and were exposed to the same monster culture that I was exposed to growing up.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That could pretty much be literally any place at all. My friends and I don’t usually follow the flow of what the general public finds fun or interesting. I’d have more fun exploring an old dilapidated building or some unexplored area in the woods than going to a sporting event with rowdy people. The theater to see a non traditional film or club to check out a new, as yet unknown band is always satisfying. Of course hanging out with other friends who have an art and or music background is also very important.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve always had tremendous support from family, friends, and teachers who always encouraged me and never discouraged me from doing what I wanted to do. Most of my friends are artists and musicians and we’ve all inspired each other.
