We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Hasemeyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was tired of seeing cool things happen in other cities and wanted to create a that made people my age and younger want to stay and keep their talents here in Riverside.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are focused on the customer experience at our shop. Our team follows the 3 T’s to ensure each customer has a memorable experience, Three seconds – Greet the Customer within Three seconds, Thoughtful Experience – Give them a Thoughtful Experience, Tie it In – follow up with the customer and make sure they enjoyed their drink or make a personal connection. The second thing is how we think different about coffee. 4 people on our team know how to roast coffee as well as work on bar so we have an intimate relationship with the coffee and really know how to get the most out of each one. We test them daily to make sure they meet our standards and work as a team to find the best way to serve them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First place we always take people is the our shop, there aren’t many places in the U.S. that do food and coffee well so the fact that we have both is unique. For lunch we are gonna hit a local deli called Marissa’s, the sandwiches classic and delicious. Following we are going to finish off at our favorite restaurant called the Salted Pig, their drink menu is off the charts and their food is the best around. For desert we would travel all the way to Redlands for some nitro ice cream by A la Minute. Other notable places are Simple Simons, Substation, Backstreet, Wolfskill, The State and Aroi Mak Mak.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I turned to podcasts early on to learn and grow. I listened to the Phat Startup, This is Your Life by Michael Hyatt, Startup Podcast by Gimlet media and the Entreleadership Podcast. Also I my business partners are very successful in their fields so they have made a huge impact in my life and leadership style. Jonathan Murtaugh, who ran Facebook LA was very instrumental in how I viewed social media as a tool of the business and helped me with hiring our first team members. Brian Jaramillo is the President of Tilden Coil Constructors and has helped me develop my strategy for personal development and team development. And Rob Dodman is a partner at Ratkovich Properties and has been very instrumental in understanding how to run a restaurant, how to manage labor and get the most out of your team.
